Chicago Startups We Cover in 2026: B2B SaaS, Marketplaces, and Industrial AI

Chicago startups with real /startup/ profiles — ActiveCampaign, SpotHero, Uptake, Flash Hoops, Journera, and Hatch — plus local fund links and honest coverage gaps.

Chicago startup coverage on Venture Capital Tracker is still thinner than the full market — but no longer just two names. We profile six Chicago-HQ companies with structured pages, wired to four local /fund/ profiles and national capital where it appears on cap tables.

Why these names matter

ActiveCampaign is the clearest Chicago B2B scale story: bootstrapped 2003–2016, then $360M+ venture raised while staying on Dearborn Street — useful when coastal investors ask if Midwest SaaS can reach unicorn metrics.

SpotHero shows the classic Chicago Ventures / MATH path: Techstars Chicago → local Series A → national growth (Macquarie Series D). Marketplace founders should study this cap table, not coastal consumer comps.

Uptake is the industrial AI reference — Caterpillar and Berkshire Hathaway Energy partnerships, Revolution Growth on the cap table, Bosch acquisition in 2026. Maps to the Midwest industrial thesis in our resurgence note.

Flash Hoops and Journera remain valid early/growth examples with national brand capital (a16z) — not proxies for the whole Chicago market.

Worked example (illustrative)

Setup: A Chicago vertical SaaS founder raising seed points to SpotHero’s Series A syndicate (Chicago Ventures) and ActiveCampaign’s bootstrapped-to-unicorn path as Midwest proof.

Move: They close $1.8M from MATH with one named pilot customer in logistics.

Punch: The pilot contract mattered more than claiming Tempus as a peer — use real /startup/ comps only.

When this page is the wrong tool

  • You need a complete Chicago market census — we deliberately do not invent profiles.
  • You want biotech formation comps — use ARCH portfolio and life-sciences hubs, not this B2B table.
  • You count Base Power as Chicago — HQ is Austin; Illinois is market footprint only.
