Chicago Startups We Cover in 2026: Directory Map + Coverage Gaps
Chicago startups in our directory as of July 2026 — Flash Hoops and Journera — plus honest coverage gaps and how Midwest founders should use national funds we already profile.
Short answer (as of July 2026): Our directory’s Chicago HQ startup coverage is two companies: Flash Hoops (edtech, pre-seed) and Journera (travel data exchange, growth). Both connect to Andreessen Horowitz. This page is for founders and researchers who need an honest map of what we cover, what we don’t, and how to use national funds while Chicago company coverage expands.

Primary job of this page
Audience: Founders, scouts, and operators searching “Chicago startups” or “Illinois startups we cover.”
Job: Tell me which companies on Venture Capital Tracker are actually tied to Chicago — with facts, investor links, and explicit gaps — so I can shortlist peers, competitors, or proof points without a fake ecosystem dump.
Chicago HQ startups in our directory
Verified from startup JSON hq: "Chicago, Illinois" (July 2026):
| Startup | One-liner | Stage / status | Notable investors (in directory) | Profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flash Hoops | Edtech blending basketball drills with standards-aligned math for grades 3–8 | Pre-seed / private | Andreessen Horowitz (a16z TxO Fall 2023) | /startup/flash-hoops |
| Journera | Real-time travel data exchange for airlines and hotels (ex-Orbitz CEO Jeff Katz) | Growth / private | Andreessen Horowitz; B Capital Group | /startup/journera |
Search note: A full-text pass of our individual startup files for “Chicago” / “Illinois” returns these two HQ matches, plus Illinois market mentions that are not Chicago HQs (see related below). We do not invent additional /startup/ IDs.
Why these two are interesting (judgment, not slogans)
Flash Hoops — Movement-based STEM for schools and youth programs; founder path combines pro basketball and computer science. Useful as a Chicago consumer/edtech early-stage example with coastal brand capital (a16z TxO), not as a proxy for Chicago’s industrial AI cluster.
Journera — B2B travel infrastructure: real-time passenger/trip data across airlines and hotels. Useful as a Chicago enterprise data growth example with multi-round institutional backing (B Capital lead history; a16z co-lead on Series B per company highlights). Closer to the Midwest “applied B2B” pattern than consumer hype.
Neither company alone proves the full Chicago thesis (industrial AI, fintech, healthtech, supply chain) described in Midwest VC resurgence 2026. They are coverage anchors, not a market census.
Related (not Chicago HQ)
| Company | Why it showed up | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Base Power | Highlights cite homeowners across Texas and Illinois; HQ is Austin, Texas | Illinois footprint / climate infra peer — not a Chicago startup profile |
Do not count Base Power in Chicago HQ tallies. Link it only when the job is “Illinois energy market” or national climate portfolios (a16z, Thrive, etc.).
Coverage gaps: Chicago / Midwest companies we do not profile yet
These matter for founders researching the market. No /startup/ URLs until we have real structured pages:
| Name | Why it matters | Gap type |
|---|---|---|
| Tempus | Chicago-rooted precision medicine / data platform; public-market reference for Midwest healthtech | Public / large — not in our startup set as a covered private profile |
| Project44 / FourKites | Supply-chain visibility leaders commonly cited in Chicago logistics tech | High-priority private/growth names missing from directory |
| Relativity | Chicago enterprise software scale story (legal/e-discovery) | Mature software reference, not ingested here |
| ActiveCampaign | Chicago marketing automation — SaaS operator proof point | Coverage missing |
| Uptake | Industrial AI / predictive analytics — maps to Midwest industrial thesis | Coverage missing |
| SpotHero | Chicago mobility / marketplace consumer-to-enterprise path | Coverage missing |
| SoftBank-era / other industrial AI scale-ups in Midwest | Category signal for “industrial AI” searches | Named thematically only — verify before pitching as peers |
Also thin: Local seed-backed companies from Hyde Park VP, MATH, Chicago Ventures, and M25 portfolios — often the first stops for new Chicago founders — are largely absent as /startup/ pages today.
How Midwest founders should use national funds in our directory
Because Chicago company and local fund coverage is thin, use the directory as a stage/thesis toolkit, not a city index:
- Map your round to national profiles. Seed/A software → shortlist thesis-fit firms in /directory. Growth software → multi-stage platforms. Biotech company creation → ARCH Venture Partners (Chicago HQ life sciences).
- Use the firms hub for HQ honesty. Chicago & Midwest VC firms 2026 labels ARCH as Chicago HQ and Bessemer, General Catalyst, and a16z as national activity.
- Borrow proof from what we do cover. If you are early edtech/consumer with a distinctive wedge, study Flash Hoops. If you sell B2B data infrastructure into large enterprises, study Journera’s investor mix and stage path.
- Keep a local offline list. Hyde Park VP, Pritzker Group VC, MATH, Chicago Ventures, M25, Hyde Park Angels, Drive Capital — named in our resurgence and firms posts, without fake fund links.
- Don’t wait for a complete Chicago index. Thin coverage is a product fact; your fundraising process should not depend on us having every peer page.
Investor → company cheat sheet (from covered set)
| Fund | Chicago-linked company in directory | Relationship signal |
|---|---|---|
| Andreessen Horowitz | Flash Hoops, Journera | TxO / multi-round participation — national firm, Midwest portfolio touchpoints |
| B Capital Group | Journera | Lead history on Journera rounds (per company highlights) |
| ARCH Venture Partners | — (no Chicago HQ startups linked in this pair) | Chicago HQ biotech firm; portfolio skews science companies elsewhere in directory |
