Washington DC Startups We Cover 2026: Defense & GovTech (HQ Honesty)

Defense and govtech companies in our directory that sell into DC buyers — with true HQs labeled (mostly CA, plus Seattle, Boston, NYC, Israel, Finland, Paris). Not a fake DC-HQ list.

Short answer (as of July 2026): The defense and govtech companies we cover for Washington, DC / Beltway intent are mostly not DC-headquartered. They are California-, Seattle-, Boston-, NYC-, or internationally based firms that sell into DoD, IC, and federal buyers. This page separates true HQ from DC customer pull. Closest Beltway operating footprint in this set: Pryzm (Boston HQ; Arlington office). None of the rows below should be read as “DC startups” just because the customer sits inside the Capital Beltway.

Primary audience / JTBD: Founders building for government/defense who need peer comps and investor patterns; investors mapping which covered companies actually touch Beltway demand.

Fund map: Washington DC VC firms for govtech & defense 2026. All funds: /directory.

Geo rules (how we label cities)

Claim typeWhat we require
DC-headquarteredHQ in Washington, DC or unambiguous DC address
DC metro HQHQ in Arlington, Alexandria, McLean, Bethesda, etc.
Beltway presenceDocumented DC/Arlington office or strong federal GTM — not HQ
Sells into DC buyersProduct/customers tied to U.S. defense, IC, or federal procurement

Most hq fields in our startup JSON for this set are still empty; city claims below use commonly cited public HQ (company site, press, or filings) and are labeled as such.

What we are not claiming

  • No “DC startup hub” dump. Swapping “Washington” into a California company blurb would be slop; we refuse that.
  • No fake /startup/ URLs for local Beltway names we have not profiled.
  • Office ≠ headquarters. Arlington BD or a DC policy shop does not move HQ from San Diego or Costa Mesa.
  • Texas: none of the companies in the agent brief are claimed here as Texas HQ; Hadrian’s Arizona factory expansion is production footprint, not a rewrite of Torrance HQ.

Coverage gaps (honest)

Greater Washington has a dense cyber, federal SaaS, contractor, and cleared-services layer that our directory does not yet cover company-by-company. Examples of gap categories (not invented profiles): agency-focused cybersecurity boutiques, FedRAMP-native SaaS, and prime-adjacent dual-use tools with Arlington HQs. Until we ship real /startup/<id> pages with facts and whyInteresting, they stay gaps.

Also thin in-directory: investor maps for Overland AI, ICEYE, and EGIDE; expand when public syndicates are cleanly attributable to whitelist fund IDs.

How to use this page

  1. Founders: Pick comps by product layer (autonomy, industrial base, space intel, federal capture software), not by pretending you share an HQ.
  2. Investors: Use the investor column to see which coastal funds already price Beltway demand; then open In-Q-Tel for strategic Arlington capital.
  3. Operators / researchers: Trust the HQ column first; treat “DC” as buyer geography unless we explicitly say metro HQ.
  4. Next: DC govtech & defense VC map/directory.
