Switched Source Secures $17M+ to Unlock Distribution-Grid Capacity
Cubit Capital led more than $17M for Switched Source to scale Phase-EQ manufacturing and utility deployments; the formal round stage was undisclosed.
Switched Source has secured more than $17 million to expand manufacturing and deployment of power-electronics equipment designed to unlock capacity from existing electricity distribution networks.
Cubit Capital led the financing. ABB, Emerald Technology Ventures, Red Cedar Ventures, Southern States, Southwire Company and other strategic investors participated. The company did not disclose a formal stage, exact final amount or valuation.

Grid capacity has become a speed problem
Electric utilities face load growth from electric vehicles, heat pumps, manufacturing and data centers. Traditional responses—new substations, reconductoring and larger transformers—can take years to permit, procure and build.
Switched Source's Phase-EQ is a medium-voltage device that dynamically balances power across the three phases of a distribution circuit. By reducing imbalance and congestion, the company says utilities can serve additional load while improving reliability and power quality.
The investment thesis is therefore less about generating electricity and more about extracting more usable capacity from infrastructure already in the ground.
The company's operating data is the strongest part of the story
Switched Source reports that Phase-EQ has exceeded 150,000 operating hours across twelve utility service areas. It says field deployments have increased load-serving capacity by 10% to 25% and that each installation can connect the equivalent of 100 to 200 additional homes.
The company also claims a 14-to-20-week period from purchase order to site activation, compared with one to three years for many conventional distribution upgrades.
Those figures are not independently audited, but they give investors concrete milestones to test. For hardware sold into regulated utilities, accumulated field hours and repeat deployments matter more than pilot announcements.
Strategic investors reduce one risk and introduce another
ABB, Southern States and Southwire bring manufacturing, utility-equipment and distribution relationships. Their participation can shorten product qualification and channel development.
It can also shape the company's options. Strategic investors may prefer integration with their own product lines or sales channels, while utilities generally want interoperable equipment and multiple suppliers. Switched Source will need to preserve enough neutrality to sell broadly.
Cubit Capital's lead role adds financial sponsorship, while Emerald Technology Ventures and Red Cedar Ventures contribute specialist and regional networks.
The $99 million DOE project is separate from the financing
Switched Source is participating in a five-year, $99 million US Department of Energy Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships project in the Southeast. That project is intended to deploy Phase-EQ units for feeder reconfiguration and storm restoration.
The $99 million project value should not be added to the $17 million financing or treated as company revenue. It is a separate public-sector program involving deployment obligations and multiple costs.
Manufacturing is now the execution bottleneck
The company plans to add manufacturing, quality and supply-chain roles in Chicago. Scaling medium-voltage hardware requires different capital and controls from scaling software: component qualification, contract manufacturing, testing capacity, warranty reserves and utility certification all consume time and cash.
The financing should help move Phase-EQ from limited deployments toward repeatable production. Investors will want evidence that unit costs decline without compromising reliability.
What to watch
The next milestones are repeat utility orders, manufacturing throughput, field-failure rates, time to interconnection, and whether the 10%–25% capacity improvement persists across diverse circuits.
Switched Source is addressing a real bottleneck with measurable equipment. Its challenge is turning successful utility demonstrations into a standard procurement category before slower conventional upgrades or competing grid-enhancing technologies catch up.
Accuracy note: Switched Source disclosed “over $17 million” and did not name a formal round stage or valuation. S&P Capital IQ reported that the security was convertible preferred stock. Operating-hour, capacity and deployment-time metrics are company claims. The separate $99 million DOE project is not part of the financing amount.
