A16z Speedrun is Andreessen Horowitz's highly selective, 12-week, in-person San Francisco startup residency. It invests $500,000 upfront for 10% through a SAFE and may invest another $500,000 in a qualifying future round. The program also offers a large package of conditional partner credits and access to operators, customers, recruiting support and investors. Applications are free and accepted year-round. The important catch: the November 1, 2026 priority window for SR008 has closed. New applications now go to the following residency, SR009, unless Speedrun tells an applicant otherwise.

If you are deciding whether to apply, start with the official application, then use this guide to understand the dates, investment economics, eligibility, selection criteria, actual founder experience and people behind the program. All announced dates below are in Pacific Time unless otherwise stated.

Apply to a16z Speedrun: deadline and next steps (updated November 4, 2026)

SR008's November 1 priority deadline has passed. Speedrun's application page says new submissions after that date are considered for SR009, which is planned for late July 2027; a new priority deadline has not been announced. If you applied earlier, do not reapply just because your dashboard still says pending. Apply through a16z · Check application status · Official FAQ.

Can you apply? Solo founders, international founders and pre-revenue teams are eligible. The residency requires in-person participation in San Francisco; housing is not included. The standard initial deal is $500,000 for 10% via SAFE, with up to another $500,000 conditional on a qualifying subsequent financing. The advertised $10M+ credits are partner offers, not cash.

What SR008 applicants actually report on Reddit

The SR008 application thread and October 2026 response thread show widely varying timelines: some founders report a video request one day after applying; others say their status remained pending for weeks. Some report a second interview, reference requests, or rejection after a video or interview. These are anonymous, self-selected reports and do not establish official stages, guarantees, or acceptance probabilities.

One applicant describes a three-minute requested video split between founder introductions and the product/why-now/why-this-team narrative; another reports a seven-day submission window. Treat these as examples, not universal rules: the invitation you receive controls your requirements. SR007 timeline discussion also contains complaints about long waits after video requests. A pending status alone cannot reliably predict acceptance or rejection.

Referrals: founders ask whether scouts or alumni referrals help, but these threads do not establish a measured referral advantage. Focus on the application and product evidence, not unsolicited mass outreach.

The 15-minute interview: practice these answers

  1. What have you shipped in the last 14 days, and what changed after user feedback?
  2. Who is your first specific customer, and how do you reach the next ten?
  3. What do existing alternatives get wrong, and why is your solution defensible?
  4. Why are these founders unusually qualified to solve the problem together?
  5. What would you accomplish during the residency that you cannot accomplish without it?
  6. What evidence could disprove your thesis, and what will you test next?

These are editorial practice questions, not a leaked or verified Speedrun interview script. A founder with no revenue can still demonstrate customer discovery, speed and a credible prototype.

Editorial discrepancy to know: The current Speedrun application page says SR008 runs February 1-April 16, 2027, but the official FAQ says February 1-April 18, 2027. Both agree that SR008 Demo Day is April 13. Confirm your personal travel and program-end date with sr-team@a16z.com rather than relying on a third-party calendar.

The a16z Speedrun calendar: SR007, SR008, SR009 and what comes next

Speedrun ordinarily runs two residencies per year, each in San Francisco. 'Applications open' and 'program starts' are different events: the application portal accepts submissions throughout the year, but announced priority windows determine which cohort reviews applications fastest.

Cohort / milestoneVerified datesStatus / important qualification
SR006Began in January 2026Past residency; a16z reports having reviewed over 19,000 startup applications for this cohort. The exact beginning and end dates are not independently established here.

SR009 Demo DayOctober 5, 2027Listed in the official FAQ.

The company directory includes earlier batches SR001 through SR005, but a complete verified schedule of their deadlines is not published on Speedrun's main FAQ. Avoid calendars that guess past or future dates. For historical companies, check the official company directory and the a16z Speedrun archive. The October 2026 SR007 Demo Day recap confirms a recent cohort of 80 companies and more than 2,000 investor RSVPs, although an RSVP is not an investment commitment.

Can you still get into SR008 after November 1?

The publicly stated answer is not through the normal application route. Speedrun tells applicants submitting after November 1 that they will be considered for the following residency. Anyone who applied before the deadline should check their existing application status, not automatically assume rejection because the deadline passed. The program has not publicly announced an exception for new post-deadline SR008 applications.

Which a16z Speedrun alumni succeeded? SR001–SR007 companies and outcomes

The strongest proof of the program is what graduates build and finance after acceptance—not an acceptance badge. For historical cohort membership, start with a16z's official searchable directory. The independent GPAgent cohort index listed 321 companies and 639 founders across SR001–SR007 on November 4, 2026. This is a directory count, not 321 commercially successful companies. A separate Recent Funding tracker tracked 312 alumni, including 40 with individually sourced financing events; it is not a census of all funding and its total is not program-wide performance.

How to read these outcomes: The investments above are different rounds with different dates. Some occurred around the program; others came much later. Company-disclosed active users, annualized run rates, preorders and investor RSVPs are not audited revenue or exits. Do not sum the listed rounds into a Speedrun program return, attribute all later funding to Speedrun, or treat the absence of a sourced raise as company failure.

The roster is an independent indexed snapshot of publicly listed cohort members. Each entry should be checked against the official Speedrun companies directory, particularly after renaming or changes in membership. Beware name collisions: VCT's existing pages for Cedar, Belong and Metal (tokenized finance) refer to different businesses from the same-named Speedrun alumni. VCT also tracks a separate Meridian business. Those unrelated profiles are intentionally not linked here.

Which outcomes should a founder actually compare?

There are at least four kinds of evidence: (1) a publicly sourced follow-on investment, (2) independently documented product or customer adoption, (3) self-reported traction that still needs verification, and (4) mere cohort membership. Runware and FLORA have both financing announcements and product evidence. Syncere has substantial financing but consumer shipping scale still needs verification. Brief has a useful firsthand founder account but no separately verified follow-on round in this review. These are fundamentally different signals.

How much does a16z Speedrun invest? Read the deal, not just the headline

The headline 'up to $1 million' combines an initial investment with a separate conditional follow-on. They are not interchangeable.

1. Initial check: $500,000 for 10% via SAFE. On a simplified post-money-equivalent basis, $500,000 / 10% equals $5 million. That is a useful intuitive benchmark, not a claim that a priced equity round occurred at a $5 million valuation. The actual legal mechanics depend on the signed SAFE and capital structure.

2. Potential second check: up to $500,000. The official FAQ specifies a qualifying next round of at least $2 million within 18 months. It does not fully spell out how every qualifying financing, simultaneous pro-rata purchase, pricing choice and timing contingency works. Do not count this second check as initial runway or assume it will definitely be wired.

3. Other standard provisions. Speedrun seeks rights to invest pro rata in subsequent rounds, asks the company to create or maintain an employee equity option pool, and does not require a board seat as part of its current standard deal. It says it generally does not individually negotiate its standard terms. Have startup counsel review the SAFE and follow-on documents before signing.

4. Partner credits are conditional discounts, not cash. The advertised $10 million-plus across cloud, model, AI and software providers is a catalogue of offers, not $10 million deposited into your bank account. Realized value depends on eligibility, expiry, usage caps, current vendors and the cost of switching providers. Credits become available after the investment funds are wired.

Worked ownership example: why $500K plus $500K does not equal a free $1M

Suppose two founders start at 100% ownership with no existing option pool, convert the first Speedrun SAFE into 10% ownership, then raise a new $2 million priced round at a $10 million pre-money valuation. Assume the potential additional $500,000 Speedrun investment is included within the $2 million round and buys at the same price, and ignore new option pools, other convertibles and special rights only for illustration.

ShareholderImmediately after first 10% SAFE conversionAfter illustrative $2M round at $10M pre-money
Original founders90.00%75.00%
Speedrun, initial SAFE ownership10.00%8.33%
Speedrun, new $500K round investment-4.17%
Other new investors investing $1.5M-12.50%
Total100.00%100.00%

Under these assumptions, Speedrun would hold 12.50% in aggregate after the round, not simply '10% for $1 million'. A different valuation, instrument, round size, treatment of the $2 million threshold or option pool would change the answer materially. This is a cap-table teaching example, not Speedrun's contractual forecast or investment advice.

What does the 12-week residency actually buy you?

Speedrun describes three pillars: capital, customers and talent. The practical differentiation is the number of people and introductions available while you are actively building. Alongside the investment, the announced package includes a roughly 40-person dedicated team (around eight investors and the rest operators); 150-plus C-suite founding members and 1,000-plus executives/operators in SR Insiders; a 171,000-plus-person Talent Network (with 250-plus hires sourced to date); the Launch Lab, Brand Lab, AI Faire and Tech Week events; fundraising preparation; and the live Demo Day. These are program-stated metrics, not promises that your startup will win customers or hires.

The residency operates from Speedrun's North Beach, San Francisco office. Founders are expected to work on the startup full time and attend the residency in person. The FAQ says roughly one day per week is programmed in the office, with flexibility beyond that, but four moments matter for every founder: retreat, Progress Day, First Look Demo Day and Demo Day. Founders, not all employees, receive office space. Housing is not included. Founders arriving from abroad can ask the Build in America team about immigration counsel, banking and accommodation support. That help should not be mistaken for a guaranteed visa or housing subsidy.

Is Speedrun worth 10%?

That question depends on what constrains your company. It may be attractive if an experienced but newly formed team needs a credible first check, customers in the US, senior hires and a high-density investor network. It may be less attractive if you already have term sheets at meaningfully higher valuations, cannot relocate, need a longer hardware timeline without the office/events, or only want the credits. A founder should compare not only cash received, but dilution, costs of living in San Francisco, time committed, follow-on certainty and measurable operating support.

Eligibility: who can apply, including international and solo founders

Speedrun expressly welcomes founders across AI, robotics, fintech, B2B, consumer, security and many other fields; its origins in games do not limit current eligibility. Strong candidates can be at idea, prototype or early-product stage. Neither revenue nor incorporation is mandatory. Existing fundraising or completion of another accelerator does not automatically disqualify a startup.

Solo founders are eligible, although complementary co-founder teams are generally preferred. The program strongly favors a team capable of building, testing and improving the product itself. If you are not technical, demonstrate equivalent founding-team delivery capability. Students and founders currently employed may apply, but must be building the startup full-time during the residency. Speedrun's October 28 applicant guidance says founders should be 18 or older; the general FAQ directs ambiguous age situations to the team.

International founders can apply. Speedrun says founders have joined from more than 20 countries and offers relocation/visa advice. The residency itself is in San Francisco, and its visa advisers cannot replace individual immigration counsel. Before accepting, verify authorization to perform the planned activities, tax considerations and the costs of three months in the Bay Area.

Speedrun versus Alpha Fellowship: Alpha is a separate program aimed at students, recent graduates and dropouts who may still be exploring an idea, product or team; its official headline is up to $250,000 plus credits. Speedrun is for founders already building a company and advertises up to $1 million across its two investment stages. Do not confuse their application forms, dates or terms.

How to apply to a16z Speedrun: founder checklist

The official application costs nothing and begins at speedrun.a16z.com/apply. The current public page asks for an email first; subsequent questions appear after account verification. The items below are a preparation checklist, not a verbatim or exhaustive reproduction of the authenticated form.

  1. Pick the correct cohort. On November 4, 2026, new applications go to the next residency, SR009, according to the site. Do not label the submission as an on-time SR008 application.
  2. Explain the company in one memorable sentence. State the customer, painful job, product and proof that it works without buzzwords.
  3. **Prove why you know something others miss.** Show what you observed firsthand, why existing approaches fail, why the opportunity is timely and why your team is unusually equipped to execute.
  4. Show velocity over polish. Provide a working demo or screenshots, shipping dates, customer interview notes, design partners, usage, revenue if any, or weekly learning. Zero revenue is not zero progress.
  5. Make the team section substantive. Give concrete examples of the founders building together, hard problems solved and what each person can uniquely deliver. Reviewers say they spend disproportionate time on the founders' bios and relationships.
  6. Use a short, focused deck and optional video. The October 2026 guidance permits an optional video directly in the application and says authenticity matters more than production value. Include product visuals, team information and meaningful evidence. A brief deck of about 7-10 slides is a useful preparation target, not an official form limit.
  7. Submit and verify. Look for the confirmation email, then check the status dashboard. If it does not appear within 24 hours, consult the official FAQ or email sr-team@a16z.com.
  8. Keep building. Once submitted, the FAQ says you cannot directly edit the application, but you can email new traction, a revised deck or a demo to the Speedrun team to be shared with reviewers.

Suggested eight-slide application deck

SlideWhat it must prove
1. One-line thesisA precise buyer, problem, wedge and ambition.
2. Founder advantageWhy this team has uncommon knowledge or shipping ability.
3. The lived problemActual customer observations rather than generic market-size claims.
4. Product demonstrationWorking screens, workflow or credible prototype.
5. MomentumShipping cadence, usage, interviews, paid pilots or retention.
6. Why now / competitionAn explicit view of incumbents and why this approach wins.
7. Distribution and marketA credible first 10-100 customer acquisition strategy and expansion path.
8. Next 12 weeksThree measurable milestones the residency will accelerate.

A better application answer, illustrated: Instead of 'We are building an AI agent for finance teams in a $50 billion market,' say 'In 14 interviews with controllers at 20-100-person SaaS companies, 11 described the same reconciliation failure. We shipped the first workflow in 12 days; four teams now test it weekly. My cofounder previously built the ledger integration these buyers use.' This is an invented writing example, not a verified Speedrun applicant or startup.

Interviews, application status, rejection and acceptance rate

Speedrun says every application is read by a person and it aims to respond in four to six weeks. If interested, the team may ask for an additional short video, a 15-minute investor interview, or both. Follow-up details and reference checks may follow before an offer. Submission in a busy priority window can take longer; applicants should not treat Reddit response dates as service-level guarantees.

The program says recent residencies accept fewer than 0.4% of applicants, and its January 2026 investor roundtable says it evaluated more than 19,000 startup pitches for SR006. That is a cohort-level reported rate, not a personalized probability calculator. A rapid rejection, a long pending status and a video request are all possible; none alone reliably predicts acceptance.

A useful way to prepare for the 15-minute conversation is to rehearse five direct answers: Why this customer? Why this team? What did you ship in the past two weeks? What evidence contradicts your thesis? What could you accomplish by Demo Day that you cannot accomplish alone? Expect live product and execution questions, not a guarantee of those exact questions. In its own investor roundtable, Speedrun emphasizes founder relationships, unique insight, shipping speed and conversations with real users, not glamorous slides.

If you are rejected: the team generally does not provide personalized feedback, but encourages reapplication after substantive progress in a future window. If six weeks pass without any update, first check the dashboard and spam folder, then email sr-team@a16z.com.

Lessons from Speedrun founders on Reddit — and named graduates

We separate actual alumni speaking publicly from anonymous applicants discussing the selection process. One directly attributable founder account is Drew Dillon's June 2026 Reddit AMA. The founder of Brief explicitly identifies his startup as SR005 in his AMA; its membership is corroborated by Speedrun's official company profile.

What a verified Speedrun founder learned on Reddit

  1. The network can matter more than an accelerator label. Asked about Speedrun versus conventional fundraising, Dillon pointed to the founder network and community, including meeting founders from several batches during New York Tech Week. This is the founder's experience, not a quantified dollar return.
  2. Shipping without customer direction is a trap. He described building too much while neglecting go-to-market work for a period. The lesson for applicants: show why customers need what you shipped, not only how quickly AI helped you ship it.
  3. Product context can be a competitive advantage. Dillon argues that agents need the rationale behind business decisions rather than only code and raw documents. His company's task-performance comparisons are self-reported, small-sample experiments, not independently verified benchmarks.
  4. Founders should ask better questions. Read his replies to learn which user segment Brief began with, where product positioning shifted and how he thinks about context-token waste. The useful transferable method is to connect product, customer and distribution decisions.

What named alumni told the official Speedrun newsletter

The program interviewed nine named graduates in Lessons Learned During the Founder's Journey. Their public experiences provide a stronger source than anonymous Reddit claims:

  • Ioana Hreninciuc, Runware (SR001): compress the product explanation into one or two sentences; being surrounded by strong founders raises the bar, but customers and your own execution produce the answers.
  • Michael Lingelbach, Hedra (SR002): explaining model technology is not the same as explaining the customer and use case. Define the ideal customer profile before an elaborate architecture pitch.
  • Nishi Kaza, Marlo (SR004): exposing bottlenecks to peer founders can surface alternatives that a team misses when operating in a silo.
  • Vinay Chandrasekaran, Layerpath (SR004): living close to other builders expanded the network beyond formal office events; relocation offers community value but creates personal costs.
  • Zibo Gao, Soundmap (SR003): product quality and retention matter more than applause at Demo Day.
  • Kieran Donovan, k-ID (SR002): treat investor inbound as a managed pipeline, tracking fit and building pitching confidence through repeated conversations.

The official newsletter and The Hardest Game in the World also feature difficult decisions and founder setbacks. Avoid survivor bias: these are selected alumni interviews, not a representative survey of all graduates.

Lessons from prior applications on Reddit (not verified alumni)

The SR007 timeline/status thread includes a self-reported accepted applicant describing initial application → video → interview → follow-up → references → acceptance over several weeks. Other anonymous posters reported video requests followed by rejection, or no answer after several weeks. The SR005 applicant discussion also describes brief interviews, video requests and reapplication encouragement.

A useful negative account appears in r/gamedev: a developer said the team progressed through multiple calls in SR004 and still was not selected, and questioned the program's weighting toward AI versus traditional games. That founder was an unsuccessful applicant, not a graduate. Their account adds a different perspective but cannot establish systematic investment bias.

Actionable takeaways for future applicants: (a) do not interpret a video request as an acceptance; (b) prepare a live demo and one-sentence customer explanation; (c) retain cofounder and customer references; (d) keep building even during long review periods; (e) use a post-Demo Day investor CRM; (f) reapply with meaningful progress, rather than resubmitting an unchanged deck. There is no publicly established referral advantage or deterministic interview sequence.

What Reddit applicants say: useful signals, not official rules

The most directly relevant community is r/a16zGames, where founders have created batch-by-batch application threads. Two particularly useful reads are the SR008 applicant discussion and the SR007 timeline/status thread. Broader discussions occasionally appear in r/startups and r/ycombinator, especially when comparing accelerators.

Anecdotal reports describe applicants still pending weeks after submission, other applicants invited to send a video and later rejected, and some reporting multiple interviews and reference checks. Those narratives are unverified, self-selected founder reports, not published selection criteria or statistically representative outcomes. Their useful lesson is to manage application status actively, keep working on the company and avoid interpreting silence as a rejection or a promise.

People to follow: investors, program operators and founder channels

Following the right people is a practical way to catch application announcements, investor taste, community events and advice. This is a curated list of relevant public profiles, not a claim that every person below interviews every applicant or that all ~40 team members are listed. Roles and participation can change.

Speedrun versus Y Combinator: which deal is better?

The two programs are not competing on a simple '$1 million versus $500,000' axis. Y Combinator commits $500,000 when a company is accepted, consisting of $125,000 for a fixed 7% and $375,000 via an uncapped most-favored-nation SAFE. That second instrument means YC's ultimate ownership is not just 7%. In contrast, Speedrun's upfront $500,000 for 10% is paired with a separate, conditional $500,000 future check, plus pro-rata rights and option pool requirements.

There is no honest winner for every founder. The right question is which network and set of constraints most improves expected enterprise value after dilution and time costs. See VCT's deeper YC versus a16z Speedrun deal analysis and the official YC standard deal. The separate VCT comparison should be kept up to date: Speedrun's official credit headline is now $10M+, not the $8M+ quoted in older material.

Founder questions: fast answers

What is the next a16z Speedrun deadline?

As of November 4, 2026, no separate priority deadline for SR009 was verified. The SR008 priority deadline passed on November 1, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. PT. The application portal remains open year-round, and later applicants are considered for the next residency.

When is a16z Speedrun SR008?

It begins February 1, 2027. The FAQ lists the end as April 18 but the official application page says April 16. The founder retreat is February 2-4 and Demo Day is April 13. Ask the program to resolve the end-date discrepancy.

When is SR009?

Its residency is planned to start late July 2027 and Demo Day is October 5, 2027. Exact opening and closing dates have not been publicly confirmed.

Does Speedrun take 10% equity?

Its standard initial deal is $500,000 for 10% via SAFE. A later up-to-$500,000 investment, conversion, option pool and future financing can change eventual ownership percentages. It also asks for pro-rata rights and no board seat.

Is the full $1 million guaranteed?

No. The initial $500,000 and the second up-to-$500,000 follow-on have different conditions. The additional investment relates to a qualifying future round of at least $2 million within 18 months.

Can European, UK or other non-US founders apply?

Yes. Founders from more than 20 countries have joined. Accepted teams need a workable plan for in-person San Francisco participation; the program provides access to relocation/immigration counsel but does not guarantee visa approval.

Can I apply with no revenue or without incorporation?

Yes. The company can be at idea or prototype stage; your team's ability to build and learn is central. The program can assist with incorporation after selection.

Does Speedrun provide free housing?

No. It provides office/residency access, not lodging. Its international founder support can help people find accommodation.

How long does Speedrun take to review an application?

The official target is four to six weeks. Some applicants are invited to an optional/requested video, a short interview or both; some receive decisions without interviews.

Does the application need a professional video or polished deck?

No. An optional application video exists for the 2026 cycle, and the program says authentic founder explanations matter more than production quality. A concise deck with team and concrete product/traction evidence is more valuable than decoration.

How is the Alpha Fellowship different from Speedrun?

Alpha is a separate program for young founders still exploring their company, with an advertised up to $250,000 plus credits, versus Speedrun's up-to-$1-million two-stage investment for founders already building.

Is Speedrun only for gaming companies?

No. Although Speedrun began in games, it now explicitly backs AI, robotics, consumer, enterprise/B2B, fintech, security and other sectors.

What should I do if my application is pending?

Use the application status dashboard, check spam and verify the confirmation. If more than six weeks have passed without an update, Speedrun says applicants can email sr-team@a16z.com.

Our verdict and what to monitor

For a founder with a credible prototype and strong domain insight, Speedrun deserves serious consideration when the founder needs a first institutional check, senior operators, US customers and recruiting. But the real economic decision starts with $500,000 for 10%, not the $1 million headline, and the SF residency creates a substantial personal commitment. Bring a lawyer to the SAFE and follow-on documents, a founder-friendly cap table model, and realistic expectations about credits and investor access.
