Overview
Optimyze, founded in Zurich by former Google Project Zero researchers, built Prodfiler — continuous profiling software that shows which code paths consume CPU and memory in production cloud workloads. The goal was to help engineering teams find performance bottlenecks and reduce cloud spend without manual sampling. Andreessen Horowitz led a $3M seed in February 2020, its first European seed investment. Elastic N.V. acquired Optimyze in November 2021 for approximately $20M, integrating Prodfiler into the Elastic Observability portfolio alongside APM and logging.
Why Optimyze is interesting
Swiss ex-Project Zero founders brought always-on production profiling to observability — Elastic bought the team to compete with Datadog and Grafana on cost-optimization use cases.
Product & use cases
Prodfiler attaches to running services and collects low-overhead CPU and memory profiles continuously, surfacing hot functions and allocation paths so teams can optimize code or right-size infrastructure.
- Identifying CPU hotspots in microservices
- Reducing cloud bills by fixing inefficient code paths
- Continuous production profiling alongside APM traces

Competitive landscape
Edge: Optimyze focused on always-on, low-overhead profiling from security-grade systems researchers — differentiated from periodic manual profiling.
Optimyze competed with cloud-vendor profilers and APM-bundled tools. Elastic acquired it to deepen observability beyond logs and traces — a tuck-in rather than a standalone category winner.
-
Datadog Continuous Profiler direct
Bundled in Datadog APM; broader platform but similar continuous profiling.
-
Google Cloud Profiler incumbent
Free cloud-native profiler; less depth for multi-cloud heterogenous stacks.
-
Pyroscope direct
Open-source continuous profiling; acquired by Grafana Labs.
Notable stories
- a16z's first European seed bet backed security researchers applying production introspection to cloud cost optimization.
