Overview

Founded in 2023, Langfuse built an open-source LLM and AI agent observability platform for traces, cost control, prompt management and evaluation datasets. The Y Combinator W23 team announced a $4M seed in November 2023 led by Lightspeed with La Famiglia and Y Combinator. ClickHouse acquired Langfuse in January 2026 for undisclosed consideration, bringing developer-first agent traces closer to analytical data infrastructure.

The open-source product remains usable, but commercial hosting and enterprise features carry separate obligations. Agent traces do not replace runtime security controls.

Why Langfuse is interesting

Langfuse illustrates open-core developer-led distribution in AI observability and the strategic value of high-volume agent telemetry to analytics infrastructure providers.

Product & use cases

Competitive landscape

Edge: Developer adoption and flexible instrumentation model; performance and costs vary with ClickHouse integration and hosting.

The closest alternatives differ by whether they investigate existing telemetry, orchestrate incidents, evaluate AI agent behavior, or prevent adversarial exploitation. Selection should be based on representative task-level tests, deployment permissions, data control and total ownership cost.
