Overview
Aztec Network is building an Ethereum Layer 2 that uses zero-knowledge proofs to enable private smart contracts and encrypted transactions. Unlike transparent L2s, Aztec aims to keep transaction amounts, senders, and contract state confidential while inheriting Ethereum security. The project spun out of research on ZK-SNARKs applied to general-purpose programmability. Andreessen Horowitz crypto led a $100M Series B in 2022. Aztec has iterated through testnets including Ignition and continues development toward mainnet deployment of its privacy-focused rollup.
Why Aztec is interesting
Aztec pursues fully encrypted programmable Ethereum — a16z crypto led a $100M Series B, making privacy a first-class L2 primitive rather than a side protocol.
Product & use cases
Aztec Network is an Ethereum L2 rollup using ZK proofs for private transactions and encrypted smart contract execution. Developers can build DeFi and applications where user balances and activity remain confidential on-chain.
- Private DeFi transactions hiding amounts and counterparties
- Confidential voting and governance on Ethereum
- Enterprise blockchain applications requiring transaction privacy

Competitive landscape
Edge: General-purpose private smart contracts on Ethereum — not just shielded transfers but programmable privacy via Noir language and ZK circuits.
Aztec competes in the privacy blockchain space by anchoring to Ethereum rather than launching a standalone chain. Zcash and Monero offer payment privacy but limited programmability. Aleo and Penumbra target similar ZK-privacy developers but on different stacks. Aztec's bet is that Ethereum composability plus encryption wins over privacy silos.
-
Zcash adjacent
Privacy-focused L1 with shielded pools; Aztec targets programmable privacy on Ethereum.
-
Penumbra adjacent
Privacy DEX on Cosmos; different chain ecosystem than Aztec's Ethereum L2.
-
Aleo direct
ZK-native L1 for private applications; competes for privacy-first developer mindshare.
Notable stories
- Aztec co-founder Zac Williamson previously worked on Zcash — applying ZK-SNARK research to general-purpose Ethereum programmability.
- The $100M Series B was among the largest privacy-focused crypto rounds of 2022, signaling institutional conviction in encrypted L2s.
