What Is Upper Quartile?
Updated
Definition
Upper quartile means performance in the top 25% of a peer group — the same concept as top-quartile, used frequently in LP reports and benchmark tables for venture fund returns.
Useful for: Founders, Investors
Upper quartile describes returns that rank in the top 25% of a defined peer set — synonymous with top-quartile in institutional venture and private equity reporting.
How it works
Benchmark providers sort funds by metrics such as net IRR, TVPI, and DPI within a vintage (year of first close) and strategy bucket — for example, U.S. early-stage venture 2019. The 75th percentile cutoff separates upper quartile from the rest. Rankings update as new exits, write-downs, and capital calls flow in; a fund can move from second quartile to upper quartile mid-life or slide after a large markdown.
LP due diligence compares a GP’s claimed quartile placement against third-party datasets like Cambridge Associates or PitchBook, not hand-picked peer lists. Gross vs net matters: upper quartile on gross TVPI with weak net DPI after fees tells an incomplete story.
Founders encounter the phrase in investor bios and pitch decks. It reflects historical fund performance, not a guarantee about your specific round.
Why it matters
- Founders: Upper-quartile brands can help close customers and later rounds — but verify whether the partner on your deal was responsible for those outcomes.
- Investors (LPs): Endowment models often assume only upper-quartile VC clears hurdles after illiquidity and fees; re-up rates correlate with sustained upper-quartile placement.
Common mistake
Treating “upper quartile” on a single young fund with unrealized marks as a permanent label. Quartiles are relative, time-varying, and sensitive to who is in the peer group.
