What Is Time to Value?

Updated

Definition

Time to value (TTV) measures how long it takes a customer to realize meaningful benefit from a product — first value moment, activation, or ROI — after purchase or signup.

Useful for: Founders, Investors

Time to value (TTV) is the elapsed time from when a customer starts using a product until they achieve a tangible outcome that justifies continued spend.

How it works

Definitions vary by product. PLG companies track TTV to first “aha” — connected data source, shipped integration, or saved hour. Enterprise vendors measure TTV to production rollout or documented ROI. Onboarding, implementation partners, and product defaults all shorten or lengthen TTV.

Example: analytics software might target seven-day TTV via templates; ERP might accept 90-day TTV with paid deployment. Trial conversion rates correlate with TTV during free periods — if value does not arrive before trial end, conversion collapses.

Investors benchmark TTV against CAC payback and gross retention. Fast TTV supports higher touch sales efficiency; slow TTV requires strong expansion revenue and low churn to justify CAC.

Why it matters

  • Founders: Instrument the value milestone and remove steps between signup and that moment. Professional services revenue sometimes masks product TTV problems.
  • Investors: Diligence asks for cohort curves from contract start to activation. Stalled implementations signal product or GTM friction.

Common mistake

Confusing time to first login with time to value. Customers who activate accounts but never reach ROI still churn at renewal.

  • Traction — Traction is measurable evidence that a startup's product resonates in the market — revenue, user growth, retention, partnerships, or pipeline — used to prove progress beyond vision.
  • Trial Conversion — Trial conversion is the rate at which free-trial users become paying customers — a core product-led growth metric tying acquisition to revenue.
