How it works
Asset biotech centers on one lead molecule moving through clinical stages. Platform biotech centers on proof that the underlying method works across indications or partners. Revenue may come from internal pipeline milestones, collaboration upfronts, and royalties—not only from a single FDA approval.
VC diligence asks: Does data from program A predict success in program B? Are IP and manufacturing scalable? Platform companies often raise larger rounds because burn includes parallel experiments, but exit paths include pharma partnerships early if the engine is credible.
Why it matters
- Founders: Pitch the platform with concrete program maps and partnership logic—not abstract “AI for biology” without validated outputs.
