What Is Origination?

Updated

Definition

Origination is the process of finding and creating investment opportunities—deals that enter a VC or PE firm's pipeline before diligence and partnership approval.

Useful for: Founders, Investors

Origination is how investment firms generate deal flow—the work of discovering, qualifying, and opening conversations with potential investments before formal diligence begins.

How it works

Venture origination blends inbound and outbound. Inbound arrives via warm intros, accelerator demo days, and founder emails. Outbound includes thematic research, tracking alumni founders, mapping a sector, and calling CEOs before they formally raise. Associates and partners log contacts in CRM systems, moving prospects from “identified” to “meeting scheduled” to active opportunity.

Some firms distinguish origination from “execution”—winning competitive rounds and closing. Origination credit inside partnerships often rewards partners who sourced the deal, influencing carry splits. In credit and growth lending, origination also refers to underwriting and launching new loans.

Warm introductions from portfolio founders or co-investors usually convert to partner meetings at higher rates than cold email. GPs track source quality to decide where partners spend travel and conference time.

Why it matters

  • Founders: Investors with strong origination in your category may find you earlier and understand context faster. Cold outreach from a thesis-driven firm can be genuine interest, not spam.
  • Investors: Origination quality drives fund differentiation. Winning deals others never saw supports better ownership and terms than joining every crowded process late.

Conference-heavy origination calendars should still convert to partner meetings, not just badge scans.

Common mistake

Confusing marketing visibility with origination. A famous brand gets inbound decks; origination is the disciplined work of finding the right companies, not just the loudest ones.
