What Is GP Staking?

GP staking is when general partners lock tokens or assets as collateral or alignment—common in crypto fund structures to bond behavior to LP or protocol interests.

GP staking is an alignment mechanism where general partners escrow tokens or digital assets—subject to lockups, slashing, or forfeiture—to bond their interests with LPs or protocol stakeholders.
How it works
In crypto venture and DAO treasury deals, GPs may stake governance or protocol tokens rather than—or in addition to—cash GP commit. Smart contracts or custodial arrangements define lock duration and conditions under which stake is reduced for misconduct, missed milestones, or governance violations. Staking differs from traditional GP commitment in enforceability and volatility: token prices swing, and on-chain rules may automate penalties. Some structures stake carry receipts or fund tokens representing LP interests. Traditional PE and VC still rely overwhelmingly on cash commit and clawback—not staking.
