# What Is NTM Revenue — and When Should Investors Trust It in a Valuation?

> Looking for what NTM revenue means? Next-twelve-months revenue is a forward figure. Learn NTM vs LTM vs ARR — and when forward multiples become seller theater.

Looking for **what NTM revenue means** when an investor says “we’re at 8× NTM”?

**NTM** = **next twelve months**. **NTM revenue** is the revenue you (or the buyer) expect over the coming year. It is a **forward** input to a multiple — not a fact about the past.

### NTM vs LTM vs ARR

| Metric | Period | Trust depends on |
|--------|--------|------------------|
| **LTM / TTM** | Last 12 months | Accounting recognition, one-time items |
| **NTM** | Next 12 months | Pipeline quality, churn, seasonality |
| **ARR** | Annualized recurring run-rate | Contracted vs logo ARR, expansions |

SaaS primer: [ARR / MRR](/what-is-arr-mrr-saas-revenue-metrics) · Multiples: [Revenue multiples for startups](/revenue-multiples-startup-valuation-by-industry).

### Why the period changes the price

Illustrative:

- LTM revenue: **$8M**
- NTM revenue: **$12M**
- Multiple: **5×**

Implied EV on LTM = **$40M**. On NTM = **$60M**. Same multiple, **50% higher** price — entirely from the period choice.

That is why sophisticated buyers ask: *What has to be true in the next twelve months for this NTM to print?*

### When NTM is useful

- High visibility subscription businesses with low churn
- Growth equity / late-stage processes that underwrite operating plans
- Bridging to [PE software criteria](/how-private-equity-evaluates-companies-ebitda-multiples-2026) conversations

### When NTM is seller theater

- Pre-revenue or early seed (use [Berkus](/berkus-method-startup-valuation) / [scorecard](/scorecard-valuation-method-startups))
- Pipeline full of unvetted logos
- Definition games (bookings vs revenue, gross vs net marketplace)

### Practical takeaway

1. **Always ask:** LTM, NTM, or ARR — and which adjustments?
2. **Growing companies:** NTM multiples look cheaper than they are if the plan slips.
3. **Founders:** Put bridge ARR and cohort retention next to any NTM claim.
4. **Investors:** Write the period into the IC memo header so nobody “forgets.”
