# Seed vs Series A Check Size: What Founders Should Model in 2026

> Seed and Series A tickets are not the same job. Here is a practical comparison of typical check ranges, who leads, and when to target which funds.

**Short answer:** **Seed** and **Series A** checks buy different jobs. Seed tickets fund product-market proof; Series A tickets fund repeatable go-to-market. Mixing the two wastes intros.

## Seed vs Series A — what differs

| Dimension | Seed | Series A |
|---|---|---|
| Working check (directory estimate) | ~$250K–$3M lead | ~$1M–$10M lead (up to ~$15M for some thesis firms) |
| Job of the round | Prove a wedge + early users/revenue | Prove a repeatable motion + hire to scale |
| Who usually leads | Micro VCs, seed specialists | Multi-stage / Series A specialists |
| Ownership goal | Often meaningful early % | Still meaningful, larger $ for same % |
| Failure mode | Raising A-sized ask from seed fund | Pitching seed story with A burn |

These ranges are **indicative planning bands** from our stage-based directory estimates — not term-sheet promises.

## Worked example (illustrative)

1. **Setup:** NYC B2B seed raise, $3M total, looking for a $1.5M lead
2. **Move:** Shortlist [Contour](/contour-venture-partners-check-size-2026) (~$500K–$3M seed band) and skip growth shops writing $25M+
3. **Punch:** A “$8M Series A” deck sent to Contour fails fund math before the partner opens the appendix

## When not to use these bands

- The firm published a different ticket (always prefer primary disclosure)
- You are raising a bridge or extension with an existing lead
- Growth equity / PE-adjacent rounds ($25M+) — different asset class
- Non-US markets with different norms
