# NYC VC Firms Track Record & Returns Proxies 2026: How to Judge Without Fake IRRs

> NYC investment firms rarely publish DPI or IRR. Use this 2026 proxy table — unicorns, exits, and public signals for Insight, Thrive, USV, Lux, Primary, and peers — plus a founder/LP diligence checklist.

**Short answer (as of July 2026):** You cannot honestly rank “NYC investment firms best returns” with public DPI/IRR tables — those numbers are almost never disclosed. The credible approach is a **track-record proxy**: notable unicorns and exits, rare LP filings, and deal-level public signals. [Insight Partners](/fund/insight-partners), [Thrive Capital](/fund/thrive-capital), and [Union Square Ventures](/fund/union-square-ventures) show the strongest East Coast evidence; seed firms like [Primary Venture Partners](/fund/primary-venture-partners) are judged on breakout companies, not invented IRRs.

### Disclaimer: no invented DPI or IRR

**We do not invent fund-level DPI, IRR, MOIC, or TVPI.** Private VC returns are contractual LP data. This page uses **proxies only**:

1. **Named exits and IPOs** with public reporting.
2. **Unicorn / breakout portfolio** companies visible in press and filings.
3. **Rare LP disclosures** (e.g. UTIMCO) labeled as such — not firm-wide audited rankings.
4. **Deal-level multiples** when the press sources a specific stake (not fund TVPI).

If a site lists “top NYC VC by IRR” without a method and source, treat it as marketing. For metric definitions, read [IRR vs MOIC vs DPI vs TVPI](/what-is-irr-vs-moic-vs-dpi-vc-returns).

### Track-record proxy table (NYC / East Coast)

| Firm | Notable unicorns / exits (public) | Public signal | Honesty note |
|---|---|---|---|
| [Insight Partners](/fund/insight-partners) | Wiz (Alphabet/Google deal ~$32B, 2025); monday.com IPO (2021); WalkMe / Recorded Future / Own M&A | Bloomberg reported ~15.5x MOIC / ~$2.7B proceeds on Insight’s Wiz stake (deal-level, not fund DPI) | ScaleUp software + take-privates; dense exit volume; **no public fund IRR table** |
| [Thrive Capital](/fund/thrive-capital) | Instagram (pre-Facebook); Slack, GitHub; Stripe & OpenAI (large marked positions); Isomorphic Labs $600M lead (2025) | Concentrated crossover book; many flagship marks still unrealized | Strong **logo / markup** signal; **DPI remains opaque** to outsiders until major liquidity events |
| [Union Square Ventures](/fund/union-square-ventures) | Twitter, Zynga, Tumblr; Etsy IPO; Coinbase direct listing; Stripe (early) | UTIMCO LP disclosures historically showed very high IRR on older vintages (Business Insider / public LP data) | Rare public window via **state endowment filings** — still not a complete firm scorecard |
| [Lux Capital](/fund/lux-capital) | Auris Health (J&J, up to ~$6B); Recursion IPO (RXRX); MosaicML→Databricks; Anduril & Applied Intuition (large private marks) | Deep-tech exits + defense/AI unicorns | Long-duration science bets; **fund DPI not public** |
| [Primary Venture Partners](/fund/primary-venture-partners) | Chief; Latch (SPAC 2021); Mirror→Lululemon; Jet.com→Walmart (via partner history / portfolio) | NYC-exclusive seed; $625M Fund V (2026) | Seed track record = **breakouts + follow-on quality**, not published IRR |
| [Greycroft](/fund/greycroft) | Consumer / fintech / media portfolio with multiple public and M&A outcomes across vintages | Multi-stage NYC shop with visible media+consumer exits | Proxy via portfolio breadth; **no audited public DPI** |
| [RRE Ventures](/fund/rre-ventures) | Long NYC early–growth book; historic software and infra winners | Multi-decade East Coast franchise | Longevity ≠ published returns; diligence still needs LP data |
| [Lerer Hippeau](/fund/lerer-hippeau) | Seed consumer + B2B winners across NYC cycles | High seed activity signal | Activity ≠ DPI; evaluate partner-level outcomes |
| FirstMark Capital *(no /fund page yet)* | Enterprise + consumer early bets (e.g. historic Pinterest-era NYC lore; modern enterprise SaaS) | Community + enterprise brand | Named without invented metrics |
| BoxGroup *(no /fund page yet)* | Ultra-early volume portfolio; many later-stage breakouts | Activity / logo density | Seed spray ≠ fund return; ask for vintage DPI in data room |

### Firm notes (evidence, not scorecards)

#### Insight Partners — densest public exit evidence

Insight’s software ScaleUp model produces the most **observable** liquidity among NYC HQ firms: monday.com (IPO; Insight was the largest pre-IPO holder per CNBC), plus 2024–2025 M&A including Recorded Future (Mastercard), Own (Salesforce), WalkMe (SAP), and the Wiz–Google transaction. Press figures on Wiz proceeds are **deal-level MOICs**, not a substitute for Fund XII DPI. Deeper playbook: [Insight Partners growth-equity guide](/nyc-insight-partners-90b-aum-growth-equity-playbook).

#### Thrive Capital — concentration and unrealized marks

Thrive’s public story is Instagram (exit), Slack/GitHub liquidity, and oversized private marks in Stripe and OpenAI. That is a **track-record proxy for selection quality**, not a published net IRR. Until flagship positions distribute, outsiders cannot truthfully claim a current firm-wide DPI. Context: [Thrive Capital overview](/nyc-thrive-capital-15b-aum-josh-kushner).

#### USV — thesis discipline + rare LP windows

USV’s early network bets (Twitter, Etsy, Coinbase) are the East Coast early-stage gold standard for **realized public outcomes**. Occasional endowment disclosures (UTIMCO) give LPs a peek; they do **not** authorize inventing a 2026 “USV IRR rank” for every fund. Thesis background: [USV thesis-driven model](/nyc-union-square-ventures-thesis-driven-usv).

#### Lux Capital — deep-tech realizations

Lux’s Auris (J&J), Recursion IPO, and MosaicML sale sit beside still-private Anduril / Applied Intuition marks. Deep tech DPI arrives late; judge via exit quality and follow-on syndicate strength, not fake early IRRs. See [Lux Capital deep-tech profile](/nyc-lux-capital-deep-tech-frontier-science).

#### Primary — NYC seed proxy

Primary’s signal is NYC breakouts and Fund V scale ($625M), not a PitchBook IRR leaderboard. Founders should ask which partners led Chief-level outcomes and how reserves work post-seed. See [Primary Fund V playbook](/nyc-primary-ventures-625m-fund-v-seed-playbook).

### Founder take: evaluate credibility without fake IRRs

1. **Ask the vintage question:** Which fund writes your check, and what year is it? A 2021 vintage under DPI pressure behaves differently from a fresh 2026 vehicle.
2. **Prefer ownership + entry stage over logo lists:** “We’re in Stripe” means little if the firm bought 0.1% at a late secondary.
3. **Probe reserves and follow-on behavior:** Track record includes whether they support winners through Series B — or orphan them.
4. **Partner > brand:** Who sits on the board, and what did *that* partner personally lead?
5. **Read metrics correctly:** DPI = cash back; TVPI includes marks. Definitions: [IRR / MOIC / DPI / TVPI](/what-is-irr-vs-moic-vs-dpi-vc-returns).

### LP take: filter with proxies, underwrite with data rooms

1. **Proxies filter, they don’t underwrite.** Use the table above to shortlist; require net DPI/TVPI by vintage in the data room.
2. **Separate deal MOIC from fund DPI.** A 15x Wiz stake can sit inside a fund with mediocre overall distributions.
3. **Demand write-down honesty.** East Coast firms that marked crypto/fintech aggressively in 2021 should show 2022–2024 NAV discipline.
4. **Stage-match the benchmark.** Seed DPI timelines ≠ growth-equity DPI timelines. Do not compare Primary Fund V to Insight ScaleUp books on the same IRR clock.
5. **East Coast ≠ one market.** NYC software/crossover differs from Boston biotech; keep city playbooks separate ([Boston biotech VC](/2026-boston-vc-2026-biotech-dominance-playbook)).

### Methodology

- **Scope:** NYC-headquartered firms with clear public exit/unicorn evidence; East Coast framing for founders comparing beyond SF.
- **Ranking:** We deliberately **do not** publish a “best returns” IRR order.
- **Sources:** Firm sites, SEC/IPO coverage, major press (Bloomberg, CNBC, Business Insider LP filings), and our fund profiles.
- **Gaps:** BoxGroup, FirstMark, BBG, Tiger Global, and General Atlantic appear in prose or AUM lists where relevant but lack full `/fund/` pages or public DPI — we do not invent either.
