# NYC Seed-Stage VC Firms Ranking 2026: Who Actually Leads

> A methodology-first 2026 ranking of NYC seed VCs — Primary, Lerer Hippeau, Boldstart, BoxGroup, and peers — by lead visibility, seed-mandate fund size, and sector fit (not raw AUM).

**Short answer (as of July 2026):** For a **NYC seed stage VC firms ranking**, weight **who leads seed**, **fund size dedicated to seed**, and **sector fit** — not raw AUM. The top shortlist for founders raising institutional seed is **[Primary Venture Partners](/fund/primary-venture-partners)** (Fund V **$625M**, Feb 2026), **[Lerer Hippeau](/fund/lerer-hippeau)** (Fund IX **$200M**, Apr 2025), **[Boldstart Ventures](/fund/boldstart-ventures)** (Fund VII **$250M**, Jul 2025), **[BoxGroup](/fund/box-group)** (**$550M** across two funds, Oct 2025), and **[Work-Bench](/fund/work-bench)** (Fund IV **$160M**, May 2025). Insight-scale AUM does not equal seed fit.

## NYC seed stage VC ranking 2026

| Rank | Firm | Fund / vintage signal | Typical check band | Sector focus | Why ranked | Profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Primary Venture Partners | Fund V **$625M** (Feb 2026) | ~**$5–10M** avg (Fund V; approx.) | Generalist seed: vertical AI, fintech, health, cyber, infra | Largest recent dedicated seed vehicle from an NYC-rooted firm; publicly framed as leading pre-seed/seed at institutional scale | [/fund/primary-venture-partners](/fund/primary-venture-partners) |
| 2 | Lerer Hippeau | Fund IX **$200M** (Apr 2025); ~**$1.4B** AUM disclosed at close | ~**$500K–$3M** (approx.; firm does not publish a fixed band) | Consumer + B2B generalist seed | Highest long-run NYC seed volume signal (400+ companies); Fund IX is pure early-stage | [/fund/lerer-hippeau](/fund/lerer-hippeau) |
| 3 | Boldstart Ventures | Fund VII **$250M** (Jul 2025) | **$500K–$15M** inception checks (firm-stated) | Enterprise / dev tools / “autonomous enterprise” | Explicit day-one lead model; Fund VII sized to stay early, not drift mid-market | [/fund/boldstart-ventures](/fund/boldstart-ventures) |
| 4 | BoxGroup | **$550M** across BoxGroup Seven + Leaven (Oct 2025) | ~**$250K–$1M** (approx.; ultra-early) | Generalist pre-seed/seed | Extreme first-check visibility (Ramp, Plaid, Airtable-era pattern); high lead/co-lead rate at company formation | [/fund/box-group](/fund/box-group) |
| 5 | Work-Bench | Fund IV **$160M** (May 2025) | **$2–4M** seed leads (firm-stated) | Enterprise B2B only | Pure seed lead mandate + Fortune 500 GTM network; not a generalist dabbler | [/fund/work-bench](/fund/work-bench) |
| 6 | Contour Venture Partners | Fund IV **$82M** (2020); Fund V raising (SEC: **$42M** toward ~**$90M** target as of May 2024) | ~**$500K–$1.5M** (approx.) | Enterprise SaaS, vertical B2B, fintech | Classic NYC seed lead shop (Datadog, Movable Ink history); smaller fund = true seed ownership | [/fund/contour-venture-partners](/fund/contour-venture-partners) |
| 7 | Union Square Ventures | Multi-vintage; ~**$1.5B+–$2.5B+** AUM cited across coverage | Concentrated; not a published retail check band | Thesis: networks, crypto infra, climate, fintech | Still leads seed/Series A when thesis fits; ranked below pure seed specialists because fund model is multi-stage/concentrated | [/fund/union-square-ventures](/fund/union-square-ventures) |
| 8 | Lux Capital | Multi-vintage deep-tech platform (~**$4B+** AUM in industry coverage) | Deal-specific; often meaningful early institutional | Deep tech, AI, biotech, defense, robotics, space | Best NYC-rooted early check for science/frontier founders; not a general SaaS seed factory | [/fund/lux-capital](/fund/lux-capital) |
| 9 | Greycroft | Seed-to-growth; **>$1B** across Partners VII + Growth IV (Apr 2023 close) | Seed often modeled ~**$250K–$3M** (approx.; not a firm fixed policy) | Consumer, enterprise SaaS, fintech, media | Active NY + LA seed/Series A leads with follow-on muscle; multi-stage so seed is one lane, not the only lane | [/fund/greycroft](/fund/greycroft) |
| 10 | Thrive Capital | Multi-stage / crossover (~**$15B+** AUM in public coverage) | Selective; scales from early to large growth | Internet, software, category winners | Seed-relevant for high-conviction category bets; **not** a volume seed firm — include for quality of early marks, not check count | [/fund/thrive-capital](/fund/thrive-capital) |
| 11 | Charge Ventures | Pre-seed/seed specialist (no large public 2025–26 flagship disclosed here) | Early institutional; deal-specific | Technical founders, generalist | Useful first-institutional NYC check; lower rank due to thinner public fund-size signal vs peers above | [/fund/charge-ventures](/fund/charge-ventures) |

**Also active (prose only — no `/fund/` page in our directory):** FirstMark Capital, Bowery Capital, Bloomberg Beta, and BBG Ventures remain visible NYC early-stage names. Use them in outreach when sector fits; we do not invent profile URLs.

### Methodology (not pure AUM)

This is a **seed-mandate ranking**, not an [AUM leaderboard](/nyc-top-15-vc-firms-2026-aum-rankings). Scoring weights (qualitative, Jul 2026):

1. **Lead visibility** — Public positioning and coverage that the firm **leads or co-leads** pre-seed/seed (sets terms / board), not only co-invests.
2. **Fund size for the seed mandate** — Recent dedicated seed / inception vehicles matter more than firm-wide AUM. A $160–625M seed fund that stays early ranks above a $15B+ multi-stage book that seeds selectively.
3. **Sector fit clarity** — Can a founder predict partner fit in one sentence? Specialists (Work-Bench enterprise, Lux deep tech, Boldstart inception enterprise) score when the mandate is sharp.
4. **NYC rootedness** — HQ / partner gravity in New York. Nationwide deployment (Primary Fund V) does not disqualify an NYC-rooted seed platform.

**What we do not rank on:** Invented DPI/IRR/TVPI, “most active” claims without a disclosed deal-count methodology, or logo prestige alone.

**Honest gaps:** Exact 2025–H1 2026 lead counts are not uniformly public. Check bands marked **approx.** are planning ranges from firm posts or reputable coverage — confirm with the partner on your round.

## Top seed VCs NYC — how to use the list

**If you need a lead this quarter**

- **Generalist NYC / applied B2B:** [Primary](/fund/primary-venture-partners), [Lerer Hippeau](/fund/lerer-hippeau), [Contour](/fund/contour-venture-partners).
- **Ultra-early / first institutional:** [BoxGroup](/fund/box-group), [Charge Ventures](/fund/charge-ventures), Boldstart at inception.
- **Enterprise GTM:** [Work-Bench](/fund/work-bench), [Boldstart](/fund/boldstart-ventures).
- **Deep tech / science:** [Lux Capital](/fund/lux-capital).
- **Thesis networks / protocols:** [USV](/fund/union-square-ventures).
- **Category-defining, selective:** [Thrive](/fund/thrive-capital) — warm intro only; do not treat as a spray seed shop.

**Founder take:** Pitch the firm whose **mandate** matches your round. Primary’s Fund V check scale (~$5–10M average per TechCrunch) is a different product than BoxGroup’s ~$250K–$1M first checks. Wrong fit wastes a month.

**Skip if:** You need growth equity (see [Insight playbook](/nyc-insight-partners-90b-aum-growth-equity-playbook)) or you are shopping pure AUM ([top 15 by AUM](/nyc-top-15-vc-firms-2026-aum-rankings)).

## Best early stage VCs NYC vs this seed ranking

“Early stage” in AI chat often conflates **pre-seed → Series A**. This page optimizes for **seed leads**. For market context and themes (applied B2B, agentic finance, vertical AI), see the [2026 NYC early-stage market guide](/2026-nyc-early-stage-2026-market-guide) and the broader [NYC early-stage / seed firm map](/nyc-early-stage-seed-firms-2025). For city-wide directory framing: [venture capital firms in NYC](/venture-capital-firms-in-nyc).

## Founder take (Monday actions)

1. Pick **3–5** firms from the table that match stage + sector.
2. Open each `/fund/` page; note lead stages and check language.
3. Get a **warm intro** from a portfolio founder or co-investor — cold decks underperform at these shops.
4. In the first meeting, ask: *Do you lead seed in this sector this vintage?* If the answer is soft, move on.
