# Most Active NYC Startup Investors 2024–2026: Who’s Writing Checks Now

> A methodology-backed map of the most visible NYC startup investors by public deal activity from 2024 through mid-2026 — with caveats, fund links, and recent deal examples.

**Short answer (as of July 2026):** The most *visible* active NYC startup investors from 2024 through mid-2026 are **[BoxGroup](/fund/box-group)**, **[Lerer Hippeau](/fund/lerer-hippeau)**, **[Primary Venture Partners](/fund/primary-venture-partners)**, **[Greycroft](/fund/greycroft)**, and **[Contour Venture Partners](/fund/contour-venture-partners)** for early-stage deal frequency — with **[Thrive Capital](/fund/thrive-capital)**, **[Lux Capital](/fund/lux-capital)**, **[Insight Partners](/fund/insight-partners)**, and **[Union Square Ventures](/fund/union-square-ventures)** showing high-signal but lower-volume activity. This is **not** an official PitchBook ranking; it is a public-rounds activity map with stated caveats.

### Methodology

We rank **visibility of check-writing**, not returns or AUM.

| Signal | What we count | What we do **not** count |
|---|---|---|
| Public round appearances | Named investor on a disclosed NYC-company raise (press, AlleyWatch, company blog) | Silent LPs, secondary purchases, undisclosed SAFEs |
| Lead vs participate | Leads weighted higher in qualitative “activity signal” | Being named on a mega-round alone ≠ highest activity |
| Window | Calendar 2024 → H1 2026, with Q2 2026 AlleyWatch as the freshest quarterly cut | Lifetime reputation alone (except as context) |
| Geography | NYC HQ firms **or** firms repeatedly on NYC company caps | One-off SF fund co-invests without a NYC pattern |

**Primary sources for counts:** [AlleyWatch NYC Funding Index — most active all-time](https://funding.alleywatch.com/nyc-most-active-investors) and [AlleyWatch Q2 2026 NYC funding report](https://alleywatch.com/2026/07/nyc-startup-funding-q2-2026-best-capital-quarter-since-2021/) (BoxGroup #1 with 9 Q2 deals). Fund sizes and named rounds from TechCrunch, Business Wire, Isomorphic Labs, and firm announcements (linked in Sources).

### Data caveats (read before citing)

1. **Public rounds are incomplete.** Many seed SAFEs and insider rounds never hit AlleyWatch or TechCrunch. Real activity is higher than visible activity.
2. **Deal count ≠ capital deployed.** BoxGroup’s many small checks look “more active” than Thrive writing one $2B-led Series B. Both matter for different founder jobs.
3. **National platforms inflate NYC lists.** Y Combinator, a16z, General Catalyst, and Index appear near the top of quarterly NYC deal tables because they invest *in* NYC companies — they are not NYC-HQ seed specialists.
4. **No PitchBook / CB Insights paid export was used.** Do not treat this page as an official market rank. Figures below labeled “approx.” are qualitative bands from public visibility.
5. **Late reporting revises totals.** AlleyWatch itself notes quarterly figures can move as late-reported rounds are added.

### Most visible active NYC investors, 2024–2026

Qualitative **activity signal** = frequency of public NYC-company appearances + evidence of fresh dry powder / recent leads. Ordered for *founder shortlisting by who is writing checks now*, not by AUM (for AUM see [NYC top 15 by AUM](/nyc-top-15-vc-firms-2026-aum-rankings)).

| Rank | Firm | Stage (typical) | Activity signal (2024–H1 2026) | Example recent / notable deals (sourced) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | [BoxGroup](/fund/box-group) | Pre-seed / seed | **Very high** — #1 AlleyWatch Q2 2026 NYC investor (9 deals); #2 all-time NYC index (~270 deals) | Broad ultra-early participation across NYC SaaS/fintech/AI; rarely sole lead |
| 2 | [Lerer Hippeau](/fund/lerer-hippeau) | Seed | **Very high** — #1 all-time AlleyWatch NYC index (~319 deals); consistent seed volume | Brami $33M Series B participant (May 2026); long consumer + SaaS book |
| 3 | [Primary Venture Partners](/fund/primary-venture-partners) | Pre-seed / seed lead | **Very high** — $625M Fund V (Feb 2026); targeting ~40–50 companies / 3 years | Windmill seed (~$12M, Apr 2026); Haiqu seed (~$11M, Jan 2026); Biological Computing Co. seed (~$25M, Feb 2026) — firm-reported / aggregator |
| 4 | [Greycroft](/fund/greycroft) | Seed → growth | **High** — $1B+ new fund commitments; dual NY/LA platform | Led Jesse & Ben’s $10M Series A and Recursive Superintelligence Series A (May 2026) |
| 5 | [Contour Venture Partners](/fund/contour-venture-partners) | Seed / early A | **High** — durable NYC B2B/fintech seed presence; ~92 all-time AlleyWatch NYC deals | Compyl $12M Series A co-investor (2025); classic NYC SaaS seed lead pattern |
| 6 | [Union Square Ventures](/fund/union-square-ventures) | Seed / A (thesis) | **High (selective)** — ~118 all-time NYC deals; lower volume, high conviction | Thesis-driven AI + networks; fewer spray rounds than seed volume shops |
| 7 | [Work-Bench](/fund/work-bench) | Seed (enterprise B2B) | **High (focused)** — enterprise-only; steady seed leads into Fortune 500 GTM | Enterprise infra / security / data; see firm portfolio (Cockroach Labs era alumni network) |
| 8 | [Boldstart Ventures](/fund/boldstart-ventures) | Inception / pre-seed | **High** — $250M Fund VII (Jul 2025); 15+ new teams in 2025 recap | Keycard inception + Series A (2025, co-led inception with a16z); Protect AI exit path |
| 9 | [Lux Capital](/fund/lux-capital) | Early / deep tech | **High-signal** — fewer deals, large tickets in frontier science | Flourish $500M (Jun 2026) with Bezos + GV — SoHo brain-inspired AI lab |
| 10 | [Thrive Capital](/fund/thrive-capital) | Multi-stage / crossover | **High-signal** — low deal count, mega-round leadership | Isomorphic Labs $600M (2025) then **$2.1B Series B led May 2026** |
| 11 | [Insight Partners](/fund/insight-partners) | Growth / ScaleUp | **Steady growth** — ~107 all-time AlleyWatch NYC deals; software buy-and-build | Mid-market software growth + follow-ons (not a seed lead) |

**Also visible on NYC caps (name in prose only — no `/fund/` page here):** FirstMark, RRE Ventures, AlleyCorp, Bowery Capital, Bloomberg Beta, Y Combinator, General Catalyst, a16z, Index. See our [early-stage A–Z](/nyc-early-stage-seed-firms-2025) and [2026 seed market guide](/2026-nyc-early-stage-2026-market-guide).

### Quarterly notes (2024 → mid-2026)

- **2024:** Stabilization year for NYC dollars (~$15.1B full-year per AlleyWatch historical table in the Q2 2026 report). Seed volume shops (Lerer, BoxGroup, Contour, Primary) stayed the day-to-day check writers while growth stayed selective.
- **2025:** Recovery (~$19.1B NYC full-year per AlleyWatch). Boldstart closed Fund VII ($250M, July 2025). Greycroft raised $1B+ across new vehicles. Thrive led Isomorphic’s first external $600M round.
- **H1 2026:** NYC raised **$17.7B across 504 deals** (AlleyWatch) — already near 2025’s full-year total. **Q2 2026: $8.88B / 233 deals**; BoxGroup topped the quarterly investor table. Primary’s Fund V began deploying at $5–10M average checks (TechCrunch). Lux and Thrive showed up on frontier / mega AI financings rather than seed volume lists.

### Founder take

1. **If you need a seed lead in NYC this quarter:** Prioritize [Primary](/fund/primary-venture-partners), [Lerer Hippeau](/fund/lerer-hippeau), [Contour](/fund/contour-venture-partners), [Work-Bench](/fund/work-bench) (enterprise), [Boldstart](/fund/boldstart-ventures) (technical inception), and add [BoxGroup](/fund/box-group) as a high-probability participant — not usually the sole lead.
2. **If you are raising growth / multi-stage:** [Thrive](/fund/thrive-capital) and [Insight](/fund/insight-partners) are active but picky; activity signal is capital + category power, not weekly seed volume.
3. **If you are deep tech / frontier:** [Lux](/fund/lux-capital) and USV’s thesis filter matter more than raw deal counts.
4. **Do not confuse “most active” with “best for you.”** Pitch the partner who owns your sector, then use activity data to confirm they are still deploying.
