# Kalshi Raises $1B at $40B as It Expands Beyond Prediction Markets

> Kalshi raised a $1B Series G at a $40B post-money valuation. We examine its fee model, institutional expansion, investor thesis, Polymarket comparison and regulatory risk.

Kalshi has raised a **$1 billion Series G at a $40 billion post-money valuation**, five months after its previous $1 billion round valued the company at $22 billion. Wellington Management and Sequoia Capital co-led the October 29 financing. The step-up matters because Kalshi is trying to become more than a prediction-market app: it is adding perpetual futures, indices and other contracts that put it in closer competition with established exchanges.

The company named Baillie Gifford, Stripes, Andreessen Horowitz, Coatue, Layer Global, Morgan Stanley Investment Management, Sequoia Global Equities, CapitalG, Hudson River Trading and Balyasny Asset Management as participants. Reuters separately reported participation by Tiger Global and Dragoneer, citing a person familiar with the transaction. Individual allocations and the primary-versus-secondary split were not disclosed.

Kalshi says annualized trading volume across prediction markets, commodities, crypto and perpetual futures has passed $1 trillion. That is a run-rate measure of contracts traded, not Kalshi revenue, customer assets or audited historical volume.

## What customers buy and how Kalshi makes money

Kalshi runs an exchange. It matches buyers and sellers of contracts tied to real-world outcomes rather than taking the opposite side of each trade. A contract priced at 35 cents implies a market probability near 35% and pays $1 if the specified outcome occurs, or zero if it does not. Traders can also sell before settlement.

The customers fall into three groups: retail users taking a directional view, businesses and institutions hedging an external risk, and market makers quoting both sides so other traders can enter and exit. Kalshi earns transaction fees. For event contracts, it charges against the expected earnings represented by a trade; perpetual-futures fees are based on the full notional position and differ for makers and takers.

An illustrative corporate workflow is an insurance or commodities desk concerned about hurricane frequency, inflation or another measurable event. Without a directly matching instrument, the team might approximate the exposure with correlated securities or simply retain the risk. On Kalshi it can buy a contract whose payout is tied to the specified event. Whether that hedge works economically depends on liquidity, contract wording, fees and how closely the settlement rule matches the underlying exposure.

Kalshi has not disclosed revenue, net trading income, take rate, customer acquisition cost or profitability. The $1 trillion volume claim therefore shows activity, not unit economics.

## Why investors are funding a broader exchange

The new capital is earmarked for institutional sales, distribution, international expansion and products including indices, single-stock perpetual futures and compute markets. The [CFTC approved Kalshi's bitcoin perpetual-futures contract](https://www.cftc.gov/PressRoom/PressReleases/9240-26) in May 2026, giving the company a route beyond event contracts while keeping the product inside its federally regulated exchange.

Sequoia's published thesis focuses on the infrastructure underneath the visible markets: years spent building liquidity, regulatory permissions and settlement systems. Once that layer exists, the investor argues, Kalshi can support a wider catalog of instruments tied to questions that conventional markets do not price directly. The current round tests that thesis by funding product breadth and institutional distribution rather than another single consumer use case.

Kalshi's Series G follows a rapid sequence of financings. It raised $300 million at $5 billion in October 2025, $1 billion at $11 billion that December and [another $1 billion Series F at $22 billion](https://news.kalshi.com/p/kalshi-raises-1-billion-22-billion-valuation-institutional-demand-surges) in May 2026. The latest post-money valuation is 82% above May's figure and eight times the October 2025 valuation. Financing is not revenue, and successive valuation increases do not establish durable profitability.

## The closest prediction-market investment

The closest external comparison is Intercontinental Exchange's strategic investment in Polymarket. ICE invested $1 billion in October 2025 and completed a further $600 million direct investment in March 2026, with up to $40 million of secondary purchases expected. The original agreement contemplated up to $2 billion and valued Polymarket at about $8 billion before the investment. This was strategic exchange investment rather than a conventional venture round: ICE also became a distributor of Polymarket data.

VCT's [Polymarket financing tracker](/2026-polymarket-1b-1789-capital-21b-reported) covers the platform's later reported $1 billion round at a $21 billion post-money valuation. Those August terms were reported rather than established by a company closing announcement, so they are not treated as a completed comparison here.

Kalshi still faces a conflict that capital cannot settle. The company argues that CFTC oversight pre-empts state gambling law; Utah has brought criminal charges and other states are litigating that position. Regulators and critics also question whether sports and political contracts function more like gambling than risk-transfer products. The next useful measurements are actual revenue, take rate, institutional share, bid-ask spreads, repeat trading, customer concentration, international approvals and legal outcomes. A $40 billion valuation assumes Kalshi can turn exceptional trading activity into a defensible multi-asset exchange before regulation or poor unit economics narrow the opportunity.
