# What Is Upsell?

> An upsell is selling a higher-tier product, more seats, or expanded usage to an existing customer — growing revenue from the installed base rather than new logos.

**Upsell** is revenue growth from existing customers who buy more — higher tiers, additional seats, modules, or consumption — rather than from net-new accounts.

### How it works

Land-and-expand models start with a narrow deployment, then **upsell** after the customer sees value. A team buys ten seats, then expands to fifty. A startup uses a starter API tier, then moves to enterprise with SLA and support. Product-led companies trigger upsell through usage limits; sales-led teams run quarterly business reviews with expansion quotas separate from new-logo hunters.

Finance tracks upsell in [expansion revenue](/glossary/expansion-revenue) and [net revenue retention (NRR)](/glossary/net-revenue-retention-nrr). If last year's cohort contributed $1M [ARR](/glossary/arr) and the same accounts pay $1.25M this year before churn, expansion — upsell plus cross-sell — drove the delta. Upsell differs slightly from **cross-sell** (new product line to the same buyer) but both feed expansion.

Pricing design matters: clear upgrade paths, metered overages, and annual true-ups make upsell predictable. Heavy discounting on initial land can cap upsell if customers never pay list on expansion.

### Why it matters

- **Founders:** Upsell lowers blended CAC payback because you already paid to acquire the account. Customer success and product become growth engines, not only sales headcount.
- **Investors:** High NRR backed by upsell signals durable demand and pricing power — key diligence questions in Series B and later.

### Common mistake

Counting one-time services or broken renewal price increases as healthy upsell when customers would churn if forced to pay full price without new value.

## FAQ

### What is an upsell in simple terms?

Upsell means an existing customer pays more — upgrading from basic to premium, adding users, or buying add-on modules. It is the opposite of landing a brand-new account.

### Why does upsell matter?

Companies with strong upsell grow ARR without proportional sales and marketing spend. Investors favor businesses where expansion revenue offsets churn and drives net revenue retention above 100%.
