# What Is Top-Quartile?

> Top-quartile performance means ranking in the highest 25% of a peer group — commonly used to describe venture fund returns relative to same-vintage funds in benchmark datasets.

**Top-quartile** describes performance in the upper 25% of a comparison set — most often venture funds of the same vintage and stage focus in Cambridge Associates, PitchBook, or Preqin rankings.

### How it works

Quartiles split a distribution into four equal parts. A 2018 vintage seed fund with net TVPI above the 75th percentile of 2018 seed funds is top-quartile. Metrics include net IRR, TVPI, and DPI — each tells a different liquidity story. Early in a fund's life, quartile rankings shift as portfolio companies reprice.

Marketing materials highlight "consistent top-quartile" across multiple funds; LPs verify against independent benchmarks, not self-reported peer sets cherry-picked for favorable comparison. [Upper quartile](/glossary/upper-quartile) is synonymous in LP language.

Founders rarely need quartile stats day to day, but fund health influences follow-on capacity and discipline.

### Why it matters

- **Founders:** Top-quartile funds often have stronger brands and reserves — but also higher bars and less patience for off-thesis bets.
- **Investors (LPs):** Asset allocation models assume only top-quartile VC clears hurdles after fees and illiquidity premium.

### Common mistake

Declaring top-quartile status on gross returns, small peer groups, or unrealized marks alone. LPs discount rankings until DPI confirms paper gains.

## FAQ

### What is top-quartile in simple terms?

Top-quartile means beating 75% of comparable funds — usually same year and strategy. If your vintage ranks top-quartile on IRR or TVPI, you are in the upper tier of VC performance.

### Why does top-quartile matter?

LPs re-up with top-quartile managers and cut mediocre ones. GPs market top-quartile track records to raise successor funds; founders benefit indirectly when strong funds have dry powder.
