# What Is Retention Curve?

> A retention curve is a chart showing what share of users or customers remains active over time after signup — the shape reveals whether a product keeps the people it acquires.

**Retention curve** is the visual pattern of how many users or customers from a starting cohort stay active over successive time periods.

### How it works

Pick a cohort — everyone who signed up in January — and measure what percentage is still active on day 7, day 30, day 90. Plot those points and you get a curve.

Healthy consumer or prosumer products often show a steep early drop (people try and leave) then **flatten** at a stable percentage. Enterprise SaaS may track **logo retention** or **net revenue retention** by month instead of daily actives.

Example: 1,000 signups; 400 active at week 4; 280 at week 12; 250 at week 24. The curve flattened around 25%, suggesting a durable core audience. If week-12 retention were 5%, paid acquisition would mostly refill a leaky bucket.

Compare curves across cohorts to see if product changes improved stickiness. Separate organic vs paid cohorts — paid users sometimes retain worse.

### Why it matters

- **Founders:** Prioritize fixes that lift the curve's plateau, not just top-of-funnel volume.
- **Investors:** Retention shape predicts LTV and whether [CAC payback](/glossary/cac-payback) math holds at scale.

### Common mistake

Showing only cumulative registered users instead of cohort retention. Total user count can grow while every monthly cohort churns out — a curve exposes that; a vanity chart hides it.

## FAQ

### What is a retention curve in simple terms?

A retention curve plots how many users or customers from an original cohort are still active after day 1, week 1, month 1, and so on. A curve that flattens above zero suggests sticky usage; one that drops toward zero suggests churn dominates.

### Why does retention curve matter?

For founders, retention curves expose which onboarding changes actually work. For investors, strong cohort retention is one of the clearest signals that growth spending will compound rather than leak away.
