# What Is Marketplace Take Rate?

> Marketplace take rate is the percentage of gross merchandise value (GMV) or transaction volume a platform keeps as revenue—the platform's cut for matching buyers and sellers.

**Marketplace take rate** is the fraction of transaction value on a two-sided platform that the marketplace retains as net revenue.

### How it works

**Take rate = Platform net revenue ÷ GMV (or transaction volume)**

A food delivery platform processing $10M in orders with $1.5M net service fees runs a 15% take rate. Components may include buyer fees, seller commissions, payment spread, and ads—reported clearly or blended.

Take rates vary by category: high-trust, regulated marketplaces may sustain higher rates; commoditized categories face pressure toward single-digit cuts. Founders often start with lower take to build liquidity, then expand through added services (payments, insurance, SaaS tools).

Take rate differs from **contribution margin** after variable costs like payment processing and support.

### Why it matters

- **Founders:** Raising take rate without improving value capture triggers [multi-homing](/glossary/multi-homing). Tie fee increases to measurable supplier ROI.
- **Investors:** Unit economics combine take rate, repeat purchase rate, and CAC. A 20% take rate with churning supply is weaker than 10% with locked-in inventory.

### Common mistake

Reporting GMV as revenue. Investors discount headline GMV and focus on net revenue and take rate trends.

## FAQ

### What is marketplace take rate in simple terms?

If $1M flows through your platform and you earn $150K in fees, your take rate is 15%. It is the share of transaction value you capture—not your gross margin, though they relate.

### Why does marketplace take rate matter?

Higher take rates fund growth but can push supply or demand to competitors. Investors stress-test whether your rate is sustainable given [multi-homing](/glossary/multi-homing) and category norms.
