# What Is EBITDA Margin?

> EBITDA margin is EBITDA divided by revenue—expressing operating profitability as a percentage for comparing businesses of different sizes.

**EBITDA margin** is the ratio of [EBITDA](/glossary/ebitda) to revenue— a quick read on how much of each sales dollar remains after core operating costs.

## How it works

Formula: **EBITDA margin = EBITDA ÷ revenue × 100%**

If a company generates $100M revenue and $15M EBITDA, margin is 15%. Compare across quarters to see operating leverage: margins expanding as fixed costs spread over larger revenue bases.

Margins vary sharply by model:

- Mature SaaS with efficient GTM might target 20–30%+ EBITDA margin at scale (highly company-specific).
- Marketplaces and hardware often run lower margins even when healthy.
- Hyper-growth startups may show negative EBITDA margin intentionally while buying market share.

Investors normalize margins for **stock-based compensation**, customer acquisition payback, and one-time adjustments before comparing peers.

## Why it matters

- **Founders:** Improving EBITDA margin without killing growth is a late-stage board conversation. Show path from negative to breakeven to target margin.
- **Investors:** Margin profile drives which buyer universe exists—strategic acquirers, PE, or public markets each have thresholds.
- **LPs in PE:** Portfolio company value creation plans often cite margin expansion as a core lever.

## Common mistake

Comparing EBITDA margins without adjusting for growth spend buried in sales and marketing. Two companies with the same margin may have very different CAC payback and retention—margin alone is not quality.
