# Chicago & Midwest VC Firms 2026: Who We Cover (and Who We Don't)

> Chicago and Midwest VC shortlist for 2026 — ARCH Venture Partners (Chicago HQ) plus national firms with Midwest activity — with honest gaps for local seed funds not yet in our directory.

**Short answer (as of July 2026):** For Chicago and the Midwest, our fund directory is **thin on local HQ firms**. The one clear Chicago-headquartered profile is [ARCH Venture Partners](/fund/arch-venture-partners) (life sciences). [Bessemer](/fund/bessemer-venture-partners), [General Catalyst](/fund/general-catalyst), and [Andreessen Horowitz](/fund/andreessen-horowitz) matter as **national check-writers with Midwest activity**, not as Chicago HQs. Use this page to shortlist what we actually cover — then fill local seed gaps offline.

**Related:** [Chicago / Midwest VC resurgence 2026](/2026-chicago-midwest-vc-resurgence-2026) · [Chicago startups we cover](/chicago-startups-we-cover-2026) · [Directory](/directory)

### Scope and honesty

**Primary job (founders):** “Which investors in *this* directory should I pitch if I’m building from Chicago or the Midwest?”

**Includes:** Funds with a `/fund/<id>` page — labeled by **HQ vs Midwest activity**.

**Excludes:** Invented AUM, DPI, or check sizes; fake `/fund/` links for Hyde Park VP, Pritzker, MATH, Chicago Ventures, M25, Drive Capital, and peers until those profiles exist.

**Market context (editorial, not a ranking):** Chicago’s 2026 story is still industrial AI, B2B fintech, healthtech, and supply-chain software — see the [Midwest resurgence note](/2026-chicago-midwest-vc-resurgence-2026). That market is broader than our current fund whitelist.

### Funds we cover: HQ vs Midwest activity

| Firm | HQ (our data) | Midwest role | Stage (directory) | Thesis | Profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [ARCH Venture Partners](/fund/arch-venture-partners) | **Chicago, IL** | Chicago HQ; national biotech company-building | Seed – Series A lead; Series B+ participate | Biotech / life sciences; often co-founds from research | [/fund/arch-venture-partners](/fund/arch-venture-partners) |
| [Bessemer Venture Partners](/fund/bessemer-venture-partners) | New York, NY | National firm; will back Midwest companies that fit cloud/SaaS, fintech, health roadmaps | Pre-seed – growth | Enterprise SaaS, cloud, fintech, healthtech | [/fund/bessemer-venture-partners](/fund/bessemer-venture-partners) |
| [General Catalyst](/fund/general-catalyst) | Cambridge, MA | National multi-stage; Midwest founders pitch on AI, health, fintech, enterprise fit — not a Chicago office mandate | Seed – growth (leads more at A+) | Generalist; strong AI / health / fintech | [/fund/general-catalyst](/fund/general-catalyst) |
| [Andreessen Horowitz](/fund/andreessen-horowitz) | Menlo Park, CA | National platform; Midwest activity via portfolio (e.g. Chicago companies we cover) and selective sector practices | Pre-seed – growth | AI, crypto, enterprise, fintech, bio, American Dynamism | [/fund/andreessen-horowitz](/fund/andreessen-horowitz) |

**How to read the table:** Only ARCH is a **Chicago HQ** firm in our directory. The other three are **coastal/national platforms**. Pitch them when stage and thesis match — not because you need a “Chicago VC logo.”

### What ARCH is (and isn’t) for Midwest founders

[ARCH Venture Partners](/fund/arch-venture-partners) is the right shortlist item if you are forming or scaling a **science-heavy biotech** company — often before a classic SaaS pitch deck makes sense. Directory FAQs note Seed/Series A leadership and company-origination behavior.

Skip ARCH if you are raising for industrial SaaS, marketplace, consumer, or most fintech. Those Midwest themes from the [resurgence post](/2026-chicago-midwest-vc-resurgence-2026) need different capital — often local seed funds we have **not** profiled yet, or national software firms when you are ready for A/growth.

### National firms: when Midwest founders should use them

1. **[Bessemer](/fund/bessemer-venture-partners)** — Best when your product maps to a published BVP roadmap (cloud/SaaS, cyber, healthcare, fintech). HQ is New York; geography is secondary to category fit.
2. **[General Catalyst](/fund/general-catalyst)** — Best for AI, health, and enterprise stories that can absorb a multi-stage process. Cambridge HQ; treat as national, not Midwest-native.
3. **[Andreessen Horowitz](/fund/andreessen-horowitz)** — Best for category-defining tech with a clear practice fit. Menlo Park HQ. In our Chicago startup coverage, a16z appears on [Flash Hoops](/startup/flash-hoops) (TxO) and [Journera](/startup/journera) (travel data) — proof of Midwest *portfolio* activity, not a Chicago office mandate.

Also browse [Battery Ventures](/fund/battery-ventures) (application software / industrial tech) and other multi-stage funds in the [directory](/directory) when your round is past seed — still label them as national, not Chicago HQs.

### Coverage gaps: active Chicago / Midwest funds not in our directory

These names show up repeatedly in regional founder conversations and in our [Midwest resurgence](/2026-chicago-midwest-vc-resurgence-2026) note. **We do not invent `/fund/` pages for them.** Treat as offline shortlist until coverage expands:

| Firm (not in directory) | Commonly cited focus | Why it matters for founders |
|---|---|---|
| Hyde Park Venture Partners | Early-stage B2B software | Frequent Chicago seed/A conversation for SaaS |
| Pritzker Group Venture Capital | Early-stage generalist | Family-office-backed local capital |
| MATH Venture Partners | B2B SaaS / data | Chicago software specialist |
| Chicago Ventures | Series A/B | Later than pure pre-seed; local follow-on path |
| M25 | Pre-seed Midwest | Explicit Midwest pre-seed mandate |
| Hyde Park Angels | Angel network | Syndication and first checks |
| Drive Capital (Columbus) | Growth-stage Midwest | Regional growth platform outside Chicago |
| Arboretum Ventures (Ann Arbor) | Healthcare | Midwest health specialist |
| Detroit Venture Partners | Detroit-focused | Nearby Midwest metro capital |

**Gap implication:** If you are a **pre-seed/seed SaaS founder in Chicago**, our directory alone will feel incomplete — start with the named local gaps above, then use national `/fund/` profiles for A+ and specialized bio.

### How founders should use this list

1. **Separate HQ from activity.** ARCH = Chicago HQ. Bessemer / GC / a16z = national activity.
2. **Match sector before city.** Biotech → ARCH. Cloud SaaS → Bessemer roadmap. Broad AI/health → General Catalyst. Category-defining tech → a16z practice.
3. **Run two pipelines.** Local Midwest seed (often outside our directory) + national platforms (inside `/directory`) when metrics justify it.
4. **Validate companies, not vibes.** See which Chicago companies we already cover: [Chicago startups we cover 2026](/chicago-startups-we-cover-2026).
5. **Don’t invent completeness.** Thin fund coverage here is a data fact, not a claim that Chicago lacks investors.
