# Canadian Unicorn Startups in 2026: Cohere, Clio, Wealthsimple and More

> Canada's 2026 unicorn ecosystem: current private-company candidates, dated funding and valuations, AI and fintech themes, and how to exclude Shopify and other publicly traded alumni.

**Quick answer (October 2026):** Canada's prominent privately held technology companies include **Cohere, Clio, Wealthsimple, 1Password, ApplyBoard, Hopper and Xanadu**. They span enterprise AI, legal technology, wealth management, cybersecurity, education, travel and quantum computing. They do not have a common business model, and their valuations were set on different dates.

[Dealroom's August 2026 country snapshot](https://dealroom.co/unicorns/canada/) listed **75 Canadian companies that had historically reached $1B+**, **including publicly traded and acquired businesses**. An updated Dealroom country rollup can show a different total depending on the cohort and the date of its refresh. We use that data as a research map—not a claim that 75 private unicorn stocks were available to buy in October.

## Private Canadian companies to know

| Company | What customers buy | Financing and verification note |
|---|---|---|
| **Cohere** | Enterprise language models and secure AI deployments | The company confirmed a **$500M raise at $6.8B in August 2025**; later vendor valuations require separately dated evidence |
| **Clio** | Legal practice software, research and AI workflows | **Company-confirmed $500M Series G at $5B** in November 2025 |
| **Wealthsimple** | Consumer wealth, saving, investing and financial services | Private in Dealroom's August 2026 cohort; regulatory financial metrics matter more than a historical investor mark |
| **1Password** | Password, access and identity security | Private historical unicorn; evaluate enterprise security adoption and customer retention |
| **ApplyBoard** | International education marketplace and applications | Private historical unicorn; conversion, education policy and geography affect demand |
| **Hopper** | Travel booking and pricing technology | Private historical unicorn; airline/hotel economics differ from SaaS valuations |
| **Xanadu** | Photonic quantum computing | Capital-intensive scientific company with longer technical milestones |
| **Dapper Labs** | Consumer digital assets and blockchain entertainment | Historical private financing marks may predate major changes in the digital-asset market |

## Clio: why a financing headline is not the whole story

On **November 10, 2025**, Clio announced a **$500M Series G** at a **$5B valuation**, alongside the completion of its acquisition of legal research platform **vLex for $1B**. The same financing announcement identified a **$350M debt facility**. Those three figures describe **different transactions and instruments**: a new primary equity round, acquisition consideration and credit financing. They must not be summed into a fake $1.85B “funding round.” [Clio company announcement](https://www.clio.com/about/press/clio-completes-landmark-1b-vlex-acquisition-series-g-5b-valuation/).

Then, on **May 12, 2026**, Clio announced it had exceeded **$500M in annual recurring revenue (ARR)**. This is a **company-reported operating metric**, separate from the $500M Series G amount. The numerical coincidence makes Clio especially prone to misleading headlines. [Clio's ARR announcement](https://www.clio.com/enterprise/blog/clio-500-million-arr/).

For founders, Clio illustrates that product distribution, professional workflows and recurring software value can matter at scale; for investors, the crucial questions include net retention, acquisition integration, product attach and the difference between recurring software revenue and financing proceeds.

## Cohere: when data providers and primary sources differ

Cohere's own [August 14, 2025 statement](https://cohere.com/blog/august-2025-funding-round) confirmed **$500M raised at a $6.8B valuation** and named Radical Ventures and Inovia Capital as round leads. Dealroom's August 2026 historical-unicorn snapshot displays a **higher $20B estimate**. Without matching a subsequent priced transaction to that figure in the company materials checked here, VCT must label **$20B as a database-reported later mark**, not overwrite the primary announcement and imply the company confirmed the number.

The product proposition is secure, enterprise-oriented AI models and deployment. That differs from consumer conversational products: corporate buyers care about data residency, model control, reliability, integrations and total inference cost. New user counts by themselves cannot establish whether a multi-billion-dollar mark is justified.

## Which famous Canadian unicorns are no longer private?

**Shopify** went public in 2015; Dealroom still includes it in its historical unicorn list and attributes a large enterprise value. Other listed alumni in that dataset include **Lululemon, Hut 8 and other public businesses**. Their current market capitalizations are neither private round marks nor candidate unicorn startup exit opportunities.

Acquired companies also belong in an **exits/historical** section, not mixed into a list of active private firms. A company being founded in Canada is not enough to determine where its legal parent currently resides or lists shares; a rigorous dataset needs a founding-origin field and current-headquarters field.

## The three investment themes behind Canada's cohort

**AI and enterprise infrastructure:** Cohere competes on deployable models and enterprise trust. Clio sells an operating workflow with AI layered in. Xanadu works toward fault-tolerant quantum computing, which demands different hardware milestones and capital intensity.

**Consumer finance and security:** Wealthsimple's economics depend on regulated financial entities, assets, spreads and services. 1Password generates software value through trust, adoption and enterprise usage. A valuation-to-assets-under-administration ratio is not comparable to a valuation-to-ARR ratio.

**Education and travel platforms:** ApplyBoard and Hopper depend on flows affected by immigration, partner policies, inventory pricing and conversion. Their transaction volume must not be confused with revenue after supplier costs.

## How to build a more reliable Canadian unicorn ranking

A defensible current-private list uses **four gates**: (1) verify that the company has not listed or been fully acquired; (2) identify the latest *dated priced transaction* and cite it; (3) distinguish primary money, debt, secondaries and M&A; (4) compare relevant company operating metrics rather than ranking all industries by a stale dollar figure.

Country affiliation should be explicit. For a Canadian-founded company with multinational subsidiaries, a founding city and a present legal headquarters can differ, and so can inclusion in a “Canadian unicorns” table.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many Canadian unicorns are there?
Dealroom's **August 2026 historical $1B+ cohort** lists 75, including listed companies. The number of **currently private** unicorns is smaller and needs individual status checks.

### Is Clio worth $5 billion?
Clio announced its November 2025 financing at a **$5B valuation**. That is a dated round valuation, not a continuously tradable share price.

### Did Cohere confirm a $20 billion valuation?
The readily verified company release confirms **$6.8B in August 2025**; Dealroom's later $20B database value needs separate dated transaction verification before calling it company-confirmed.

### Does $500 million Clio ARR equal its funding?
No. ARR refers to an annualized recurring operating revenue metric, while the identically sized equity financing is capital investors put into the company.
