# AI Unicorn Startups in 2026: Private Valuations, Actual Rounds and Exits

> A source-backed 2026 AI unicorn comparison: Anthropic, OpenAI, Harvey, Cyera, DeepSeek, Rebellions and more, with primary funding dates and public-company exclusions.

**Quick answer (October 2026):** AI unicorns are companies that reached a **$1 billion-plus private valuation or comparable historical milestone** while building AI models, infrastructure, or products. Important still-private businesses include **Anthropic, OpenAI, Harvey, Cyera and Rebellions**. Their valuations are very different sizes because their markets, financing structures and capital needs differ.

There is **no single reliable “272 active private AI unicorns” claim**. [Dealroom's August 2026 historical AI unicorn page](https://dealroom.co/unicorns/ai/) counts **272 $1B+ historical outcomes** but includes **publicly listed Alphabet, ServiceNow and Snowflake**. That makes it a broad ecosystem-outcome dataset, not a live universe of current-private AI shares. VCT's shortlist below separates **company-announced round valuations** from **filing-implied** and **database-reported marks**.

## AI unicorns with traceable financing evidence

| Company | AI business layer | Valuation and evidence |
|---|---|---|
| **Anthropic** | Frontier models and enterprise AI | **$965B post-money**, company-announced **May 28, 2026 $65B Series H** |
| **OpenAI** | Frontier models, developer API, AI applications | **$852B post-money**, company-announced **March 31, 2026 $122B committed-capital round** |
| **DeepSeek** | Foundation models and research | **~$51.8B implied** in a July 2026 indirect stake filing, **not** a company-issued conventional round valuation |
| **Harvey** | Legal AI workflows | **$15.5B**, company-announced **September 9, 2026 $550M financing** |
| **Cyera** | AI-era data security and governance | **$12B**, company-announced **June 2026 $600M Series G**, followed by a separate **$400M extension** |
| **Clio** | Legal operating software with AI tools | **$5B**, company-announced **November 2025 $500M Series G**; it is AI-enabled software, not a foundation-model lab |
| **Rebellions** | AI inference chips and systems | **~$2.34B**, company-announced **March 30, 2026 $400M pre-IPO financing** |
| **Sakana AI** | Japanese AI research and enterprise projects | Dealroom historical **~$2.6B** reference; Series B and later Citi investment established in company releases |

**Evidence:** [Anthropic May financing](https://www.anthropic.com/news/series-h), [OpenAI March financing](https://openai.com/index/accelerating-the-next-phase-ai/), [Reuters on DeepSeek's filing](https://www.investing.com/news/stock-market-news/chinese-filing-implies-deepseek-valuation-of-around-52-billion-4796314), [Harvey September release](https://www.harvey.ai/blog/harvey-raises-dollar550m-at-a-dollar155b-valuation-to-help-legal-teams-own-their-intelligence), [Cyera June](https://www.cyera.com/pt-br/press-releases/cyera-raises-600-million-at-12-billion-valuation-to-continue-building-the-trust-layer-for-the-ai-era), [Clio November 2025](https://www.clio.com/about/press/clio-completes-landmark-1b-vlex-acquisition-series-g-5b-valuation/), [Rebellions March](https://rebellions.ai/newsroom/rebellions-closes-400-million-pre-ipo-and-launches-rebelrack-and-rebelpod-to-accelerate-global-expansion/), [Sakana AI Series B](https://sakana.ai/series-b/) and [Dealroom's sector cohort](https://dealroom.co/unicorns/ai/).

*The examples are deliberately not a full worldwide ranking.* Valuations differ by disclosure date, transaction class and geography. “AI-enabled software” has a wider definition than “company developing its own foundational model.”

## Anthropic and OpenAI: why the giant rounds are not comparable with seed funding

Anthropic's [May 28, 2026 release](https://www.anthropic.com/news/series-h) states that it raised **$65B** at **$965B post-money**. Crucially, Anthropic said the amount **includes $15B of previously committed investments from hyperscalers**, among them an earlier Amazon commitment. Counting the full $65B as *new incremental cash in May* and also counting the earlier commitment elsewhere would double count some financing activity.

OpenAI's [March 31, 2026 statement](https://openai.com/index/accelerating-the-next-phase-ai/) describes a financing with **$122B in committed capital** at **$852B post-money**. “Committed capital” is a disclosed deal description. It is not, by itself, evidence that every dollar was already transferred into operating cash by that date. A commitment's drawdown and attached terms affect its actual funding timeline.

Neither headline is an annual revenue number. Both models need enormous compute, engineering and distribution investment, but an investment valuation is not a measure of training cost per token or customer ROI.

## Harvey, Cyera and Clio: applications and infrastructure have different economics

**Harvey** serves legal professionals and corporate legal teams. Its [September 9 financing](https://www.harvey.ai/blog/harvey-raises-dollar550m-at-a-dollar155b-valuation-to-help-legal-teams-own-their-intelligence) valued the company at **$15.5B**. The company release did **not** provide a new confirmed company-wide ARR figure. A reported revenue number from a separate source should remain separately attributed, not silently converted into a company-confirmed result. See [VCT's Harvey financing breakdown](/2026-harvey-550m-15-5b-lightspeed-diffusion).

**Cyera** focuses on controlling enterprise data as AI applications and agents expand access. The company announced a [**$600M Series G at $12B** in June 2026](https://www.cyera.com/pt-br/press-releases/cyera-raises-600-million-at-12-billion-valuation-to-continue-building-the-trust-layer-for-the-ai-era) followed by [**$400M of additional investment** in September](https://www.cyera.com/es-mx/press-releases/cyera-announces-400-million-investment-from-goldman-sachs-to-build-the-trust-layer-for-the-agentic-enterprise). That extension should not automatically be mislabeled as a new Series H with a separate, invented valuation.

**Clio** is an established legal software platform adding AI research and workflows. Its [November 2025 financing statement](https://www.clio.com/about/press/clio-completes-landmark-1b-vlex-acquisition-series-g-5b-valuation/) reported **$500M primary equity at $5B**, while also disclosing a **$350M debt facility** and the acquisition of vLex. In [May 2026](https://www.clio.com/enterprise/blog/clio-500-million-arr/) it reported **over $500M ARR**. The $500M ARR and $500M equity round are different quantities: business run-rate versus capital raised.

## DeepSeek and Sakana: what if the firm does not announce the exact number?

A [July 2026 Reuters report](https://www.investing.com/news/stock-market-news/chinese-filing-implies-deepseek-valuation-of-around-52-billion-4796314) inferred approximately **$51.82B for DeepSeek** from an indirect stake disclosed in a Chinese listed-company filing. That is stronger than an unsourced social post, but it is **not a standard DeepSeek company-announced post-money equity valuation**. Record it as *filing-implied*, not confirmed in a conventional round.

[Sakana AI](https://sakana.ai/series-b/) published its Series B and subsequently announced a [Citi investment in February 2026](https://sakana.ai/citi/). Dealroom's August sector and country records place Sakana at about $2.6B, but a live company profile should show the actual source and event used to reach that figure. A strategic investment in an AI startup may be important commercially without publishing a clean price for the entire company.

## Which AI unicorns should be excluded from a current-private list?

Alphabet/Google, Snowflake, ServiceNow and other **public businesses** can feature in historical AI outcomes datasets or appear in AI-sector screening results. They are not current private unicorn startup stock. A completed acquisition similarly transfers a startup's status to **acquired**, even if its brand remains in use.

A still-private business that completed a talent-and-license deal is another distinct case. VCT's [Mechanize analysis](/2026-google-mechanize-talent-deal) explains why a rumored deal number should not be treated as an acquisition price or a new funding mark.

## How to compare AI unicorns fairly

| Type | Useful operating metric | Common analytical mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Frontier-model lab | Annualized revenue **with definition**, inference margins, compute contracts, deployment | Treating committed investor capital as revenue |
| Enterprise AI application | Net retention, annual contract value, cost to serve, verified customer outcome | Treating workflow trials as paid recurring adoption |
| AI security/infrastructure | Gross margin, production deployments, technical performance, renewal and expansion | Treating a broad AI market label as independent evidence of demand |
| AI chip or robotics company | Manufacturing yield, qualified customers, systems delivered, energy/performance | Treating demo performance or a pre-IPO round as an achieved liquidity event |

**Capital efficiency matters.** A privately valued company can be strategically important and still face expensive inference or manufacturing economics, preference structures and high dilution risk. “Unicorn” says something about a financing-implied valuation at a point in time, not realized LP returns, enterprise profit, or IPO timing.

## Questions to ask before citing a billion-dollar valuation

1. **Who announced the price?** The company, an investor, a regulatory filing, a reporter, or a valuation model?
2. **What was the date and stage?** June Series G, September extension or an old secondary trade?
3. **Was capital newly raised?** Exclude financing commitments previously counted, unless the metric is explicitly cumulative.
4. **What company is being valued?** A subsidiary, holding company, fund vehicle or full consolidated operating business?
5. **Is the company still private?** Verify IPO and M&A completion notices.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the largest AI unicorn in 2026?
Among the company-confirmed private financing marks cited here, Anthropic announced **$965B in May 2026** and OpenAI **$852B in March 2026**. These are dated private valuations and can change.

### How many AI unicorns exist globally?
Dealroom's August 2026 historical AI cohort lists **272 outcomes**, including already listed public companies. It is **not** a verified tally of 272 independent private AI startups.

### Does raising $65 billion mean Anthropic earned $65 billion?
No. It is a financing headline, and Anthropic says that amount includes previously committed investments. It does not measure product revenue or company profit.

### Is a $12 billion Cyera valuation the amount invested?
No. **$12B is the June private post-money valuation**; the actual June Series G round was **$600M**, with a subsequent separately announced investment.

### Is an AI-powered company always an AI-model company?
No. A company deploying a third-party model within a legal product is not economically identical to a frontier foundation-model developer.
