# August 28–29 VC News: a16z $1.1B, Owner $2.3B, OpenAI–Cursor

> Aug 28–29, 2026: a16z posted a $1.1B Machine Age Fund, Owner closed $240M at $2.3B, and OpenAI proposed a November 12 wind-down of Cursor models after the SpaceX close. Lambda’s $1B chip debt is Bloomberg-reported. Retro’s $21M filing is a December close.

The **August 28–29, 2026** tape that still needed a memo here is a hardware fund, a restaurant-software mark, and a vendor cancellation on a deal we already covered.

**[a16z](/fund/andreessen-horowitz)** posted **$1.1 billion** for physical AI. **[Owner](/startup/owner)** printed **$2.3 billion**. **[OpenAI](/startup/openai)** put a **November 12** clock on [Cursor](/startup/cursor) models after the [SpaceX](/startup/spacex) close. **Lambda’s $1 billion** chip debt is **Bloomberg-reported**.

This roundup is for founders and scouts who need those four facts with caveats. Last verified **August 29, 2026**. Earlier August 27–28 coverage of CivilGrid, Deep Cogito, and Atorie is **not duplicated** here.

## 1. a16z: $1.1B to make hardware an official motion

[Andreessen Horowitz](/fund/andreessen-horowitz) said it raised **$1.1 billion** for the Machine Age Fund. Mandate: chips, memory, networking, data centers, robotics, home appliances.

Named prior bets we already cover: [Volta](/2026-volta-infra-300m-a16z-altimeter-ai-cloud), [SpaceX](/startup/spacex), [Anduril](/startup/anduril), [Waymo](/startup/waymo), [Skydio](/startup/skydio), [Mind Robotics](/startup/mind-robotics). LP names and first-vs-final close were **not** disclosed.

Do not add this to [Accel’s $3.5B](/2026-accel-3-5b-early-stage-funds). Different firm, different job. Full memo: [a16z $1.1B Machine Age Fund](/2026-a16z-1-1b-machine-age-fund).

## 2. Owner: $240M at $2.3B — not Blackbird

[Owner](/startup/owner) announced **$240 million Series D** at **$2.3 billion**, led by Goldman Sachs Alternatives. [Headline](/fund/headline) participated. Meritech, Redpoint, and Jack Altman also returned — **no** `/fund/` pages for those three.

Company: **more than $100 million ARR**. The **$1 billion in sales through Owner this year** line is **throughput**, not ARR. This is **not** [/startup/blackbird](/startup/blackbird), and it is **not** Blackbird’s Australian **$1.05B** fund. Full memo: [Owner $2.3B Series D](/2026-owner-240m-series-d-2-3b).

## 3. OpenAI × Cursor: notice given, not a failed close

[OpenAI](/startup/openai) notified SpaceX that it will wind down the Cursor model contract. Proposed shutoff: **November 12, 2026**. Stated reason: cannot be confident SpaceX will stay inside OpenAI’s terms, citing X and xAI.

The **acquisition closed August 14**. **$60B** is still press. Cursor CEO Michael Truell said OpenAI is about **5% of user traffic** and that the teams are talking — a founder statement, not a filing. Full memo: [Is OpenAI pulling models from Cursor?](/2026-openai-winds-down-cursor-models). Close: [SpaceX closed Cursor](/2026-spacex-closes-cursor-acquisition).

## 4. Lambda $1B debt — reported, not a company primary here

TechCrunch, citing Bloomberg: Lambda raised **$1 billion** in private, short-dated debt, arranged by JPMorgan, to buy Nvidia chips it will lease to **Microsoft**. Same week the story cites a **$926 million** GB300 loan and talks of a **$3 billion** pre-IPO equity raise. Last widely cited equity mark in that piece: **$1.5 billion at $5.43 billion** (November, PitchBook).

**No Lambda `/startup/` page here.** Treat the $1B as **reported**. Do not publish the $3B talks as a close.

## What not to add from the same 48 hours

- **Retro ~$21 million Series A** — TechCrunch on an SEC filing dated August 19. The same story says the funding **closed in December**. Filing, not an August close.
- **Ventures Platform $84M Fund II** — already on the month hub as a smaller item. No `/fund/` page. Do not invent one.
- **YC Fall 2026 company list** — still not a public list on the apply page as of this run. On-time decisions were promised by **August 28**. Late apps remain open.
